Finally got out to shoot some of my first home-made cast rounds a few days ago. Shooting a Marlin 336, 165gn gc ranch dog boolits from a NOE mold. Used 15 grains of SR4759, which should be somewhere around 1500 fps. I powder coated half, and just did a dip in white label lube for the rest. Didn't see any difference in performance.

Once I adjusted the sight, were ok at 50 yards. The 100 yard spread was at 3 inches. It's a good feeling putting holes in targets with home rolled lead! All the info I've picked up browsing this forum has been really useful. Probably saved me from a lot of frustration and wasted time. Thanks all!

Shot some of my first cast 30 30's today. My target didn't look that good.

Great job!
I found that IMR 3031 works for me in the 30-30.:cbpour:

Congratulations! Good looking bullets too. Should be very effective on deer.

Looks like you got out of the gate in a good position!.
What did you size them?
I found 312 to work really well with Marlins Micro groove.

Perhaps I should explain "really well" better.
I loaded up a few rounds for a friend of mine ,who has a scoped 336 ,with Lyman's 31141,sized 312 and 18 grs of 4198.
First five rounds went into 1 3/8" @ 100 so we stopped there.

I have the same NOE mold and have yet to take it out of the box, but that give me high hopes for my 30-30. Good shooting and very rewarding when you roll your own and even more rewarding with your home made boolits !

Good. I like that boolit.

Now..............quit 'yer braggin' and make some more!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl2:
There is a lot of really "evil" paper out there that needs holes punched in it in little groups.

My NOE Ranch Dog mold for my 30-30 will be here today. Looking forward to getting some cast this weekend.

I ended up sizing them to 0.311 with a lee die, my marlin slugged at 0.310. I'm only casting flat points with the mold right now, need more practice with the hollow point pins in. Most of the hp's I tried casting looked seriously awful. Definitely some more evil paper out there in need of a few holes. And if I do settle on a load I'm confident in, there just might be a tasty deer getting some holes this fall too. :-)

Good for you. Now, with close attention to reloading techniques, lube, and boolit hardness issues , it is likely you can drive those RDs to jacketed velocities with excellent accuracy for hunting. Vaget and H414 are good.
