I stepped off the bus at Great Lakes IL RTC. 5 years later I hung up my Seabee uniform, 4 years after that I put on the uniform of the Air Force. in 2011 I hung up the uniforms for good. Thanks to all who served.

It was 27 years ago and at Fort Benning, GA for me. I got hung out 4 years ago but it was a good ride.

Thanks for keeping the wolf away from the door.

Dad did his basic at Great Lakes; he was a SeaBee during the Korean War. Still have his cap, patch, and a picture of him driving a Jeep on an airbase he was building in Morocco, hanging over my reloading bench. I got to play rugby at the base, and got to reduce a poor recruit's broken nose during that game. I went into the Air Force too, but always have had deep regard for the Navy.

I was waiting to be shipped out of Great Lakes 1967 to a ship off Vietnam. One morning a chief came in the barracks and picks out 5 of us and says pack your bags & report to me. So we did. The chief says your all Seabees now, your going to Morocco. Off we went. Didn't go on a ship for 3 years. spent last few months aboard the Hermitage LSD 34. Came home. It was a good tour for me. However my hat is off too those who had to go to southeast Asia. Thank you for your service.

Thanks for you service. I swore in at Detroit on April 1, 1971. Spent 2 years 18 months 14 days in the Army then 2 years in the Michigan National Guard. Hated it at the time but those memories have faded now and I'm happy I did it.

I grew up in Oxnard, CA, right next to Port Hueneme, home of the Naval Construction Battalion, and the Civil Engineering School. Did you ever serve there? BTW, I had seen enough sailors that I joined the Army when it was my turn.

The scoutmaster of my Boy Scout troop had been a SeaBee; coincidentally he came from Mississippi, don't know where. He was a great guy; I still miss him.
