I'm planning to look for an accurate 38spl load with a 130gr boolit. I have these 2 powders on hand. Which do u prefer between these two for this application? Thanks

Either one will work perfectly!

Me personally, I like HP 38, I think that it burns cleaner, and meters better than Unique.

If I remember right HP38 is the same as win 231. No one in my town sells powder so either order it online or get lucky at gun shows. Funny thing is that there don't seem to be many handloaders around here. When I go to the range the brass pickups all seem to be once fired brass. Not that I'm complaining just an observation. Frank

Either one will work fine.
I prefer HP 38, seems to burn cleaner.

Try both and use what your gun prefers. I have better luck with W231 (HP38) myself, but that is just me and my Security Six. JW

In a 38 I would opt for the HP38 (WW231).

Which ever one you can find.

Unique and win231/hp-38 in .38 special are both about as American as apple pie. Can't go wrong with either

I have shot several pounds of Unique behind 140 gr boolits. Very accurate but a bit dirty.

I would try HP38 first, especially with a 130 gr boolit.

HP38 has the caliber listed in it's name......

I'll add that with that light of a boolit, it probably won't burn clean in lighter charges. I also tend to find better accuracy in full power loads. I would look towards a faster powder if you are after light boolit/lighter loads. Your mileage may vary. :)

Either one will do just fine, but HP38 will give you more loads per pound and in these days of powder scarcity and higher prices, that might matter.

My preference would be Unique, but then I keep plenty of Unique on hand (I picked up a 4lb'er of Unique a couple of months ago) as I use it in lots of cartridges and even some buckshot loads.

Either one will work - a long time ago I chose 231(HP38) and have stuck with it.

Both are flexible powders in that you can use them in several handgun calibers. I chose to standardize on HP-38 years ago and seems to work well for me, including for use in 38 special.

HP 38 (W231) meters better than Unique at small weights (my wifes loads) and you don't have to use as much to get the same results.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to load up 50rnds of 4.3gr HP38
