35 Remington?

Got a buddy that has received a Remington Model 8 in 35 Rem. Here are his questions.

Where can I find brass?
What primers do I need?
What powder is recommended?
Book to load this or a recommended load? Answered, in Hornady and Speer.
What mould (s) for casting lead for this caliber?
Are other bullets available?

Where might one find factory ammo for this?

Sounds like you should get him a reloading manual before anything else. The Lyman Cast Bullet Manual would be a good place to start. I may be wrong but it sounds like he knows nothing about reloading.

Yep, he has no clue. But as to the first question. Brass is unobtanium so good luck w/ that one. I've lost count of how many months I've had brass on backorder. Factory ammo does become available from time to time. Buy it up when it does.

At least he has a rifle chambered in a cartridge that is still in production, even if in small batches. Just got an 81 in .30 Remington a few months back. Little tougher to find stuff for!

Is Grumpa still selling converted brass? That is pretty much your source if he's still in the business.

The RCBS 35-200-FN is far and away the most popular cast bullet design. It works very well for me.

Alliant Reloder 7, IMR 3031 and 4198, Winchester 748 and Hodgdon H335, Benchmark, H322 and BL-C(2) are all good powders as well as plenty of others in that burn range. Loads are widely published.

Get a good book for your friend and have him read it before he starts... Be safe!

Dick's Sporting goods in Omaha (Oakview Store) had several boxes of Remington 35 Rem ammo, someone must have goofed up the order.

I have a Model 81 in .35 Remington. A couple of tips I can give is there is virtually no throat; so don't go for the wide meplat, fat nosed bullet molds. They will stick in the rifling and keep the action from closing. The RCBS 35-200-FN or something like it is a good place to start. Also, keep in mind the action is recoil operated. You have to stay close to the listed jacketed velocities to get enough recoil for the action to cycle. Finally, check the take down lever for tightness each time it is taken out or during extended shooting sessions because a wobbly barrel does nothing for accuracy. Taking it down is a really easy way to clean the barrel from the chamber end, by the way. Brass availability is the most difficult part of reloading for .35 Remington.

My default primer, RP 9 1/2, works just fine in the 35 Rem and Rx7. If you can find factory ammo, buy it, brass lasts thru several reloadings. I have plenty of brass but if that were not the case I would buy factory rounds or brass from Grumpa.
The 35 Rem is an awesome CB hunting cartridge, only that makes the 358W better is the brass situation, IMHO.

For decades, people have been using 35 Rem brass for forming to 6.5x50 Jap. The 6.5 will be a little long, so you'll have to do some trimming, but not much.

last I looked, our wallyworld had 35 rem ammo. Guess it depends on what state you're in also as to ammo availability.

I use the RCBS 35-200-FN cast bullet in all my 35 Remington. Some chambers have a tight throat or forcing cone. For those chambers I push the RCBS bullet nose first into a .354 sizing die to taper the front band. My Remington Model 8 will function with a 200 gr. cast bullet at 1800fps muzzle velocity.

I haven't seen one. Reloder 17 is moving way to the slow side for .35 Rem.
