I picked up an mossburg 500ab made for western auto a few weeks ago. someone done a badddddd paint job on it. the stock looks rough. missing the stock washers. forearm is crack on the barrel side. butt is not to my liking, alot of shaping needed.

decide to do an pistol home defense shotgun. so I order an ati stock, new forearm (has not came in yet), also order a new magazine tube. the one on the gun has slide stops on it.

135230

removed a little paint with carb cleaner
135231
just setting the stock to the receiver to see what it will look like. in the back ground you can see the "crack" in the forearm.
135232

cleaned the primer and what was left of the paint with citristrip found bluing under it. it is pretty well worn.
135233 135234 I did not do this damage. 135235

cleaned the bluing off the gun very carefully with oven cleaner (may have let it set for a minute).
135236 135237 135238

now at the point I need to decide if I am going to paint the gun (the right way), reblue, or powder coat.

Well, if it was me, I'd powdercoat it because it's a super-durable finish and I already have everything needed to do the job.

That said, it's looking better already than when you got it.

Since you did all the prep, I can cut you a deal on bluing if you want to go that way.

I have all the stuff to do the powder coating. kinda leaning to that. since I don't have a large oven just an toaster oven so I am going to have to build an rig for the receiver

you're not gonna blue a Mossberg receiver. bein aluminum you'll hafta paint, powder-coat, cera-kote, anodize or somethin' along those lines.

Quick note: these is the first time I have powder coated something other then bullets.

the set up, crafts men powder coat gun, harbor freight black powder coat. a bolt and two nuts with a copper wire to hang the part to bake. an old oven to bake, foil to keep the powder from getting inside the receiver

the bolt was way smaller then the stock bolt so I used an nut both on the outside and inside to hold the receiver running the copper wire touching the inside receiver.
cleaned with acetone.

ended up coating twice, must of rubbed some powder off when I was moving it to the oven the first time.

all and all, i think I did a good job for my first try at powder coating something other then bullets

had something ask me if I was going to do the barrel too, really can't the oven picture is the largest oven I can use with out getting in to trouble.

Corey: you will get practice taking the gun apart again as the safety is the very first thing that goes into the receiver.

The gun looks nice and for a home defense gun it is just fine. Make sure to function check it thoroughly IE: shoot it a lot.

I just put the safety in the wrong parts bag, I had a bag with blank rear sights and tang screw for muzzleloaders. it is on the gun now. oversight on my part. did not put it with that guns parts. going to put the newer safety on it when it comes in.

did a feed test, safety on. nice smooth cycling, hoping to get out to the range tomorrow if the weather is like it was today. get some after redo shooting with it.

I have the same gun (Western Auto marked). My safety was plastic and broke. I replaced it with an aluminum safety I got from Numrich. No problems since.

My grandfather gave me my shotgun so it holds a great deal of sentimental value - I have no plans to change it at all.

been hunting for a shotgun for a while. used gun. these was a true fixer upper to fit my needs. all the wood was trash. forearm was cracked (more like broke) buttstock would have taken me months to reshape and get all the paint off of.

now if it was my grandfather's custom 12ga target my father has right now. it would be different.
