hiya all, I haven't been around here for a while as I got out of the casting game for a bit. however my desire for inexpensive plinking has brought me back bigger then ever! since the last time I was casting boolits Ive gotten into shooting large bore dangerous game rifles. the issue with these big guns is the cost of production bullets and huge amounts of powder burnt with each shot. so ive begun making "light" loads which save on powder and the use of cast boolits saves on projectiles.

here is a picture of my first batch of .585" 637gr boolits to be used in a 585 Hubel Express rifle. (I threw in a 22 LR for size reference)

the boolits are hard cast from wheel weight lead with rapid cooling in water. I haven't figured out a load for them yet but I may try some 577 nitro for black loads from the Woodleigh manual. heck, I might even try running them over black powder. a healthy load of 180gr of FFF powder could make for a nice light load.

Reminds me of the old saying by someone who bought a .50 cal Barrett: "They didn't tell me the gun was chambered in five dollar bills!"

some of my big guns cost way more then $5 a shot if I were to buy factory ammunition (thank god for reloading). the 585 HE is actually fairly inexpensive to feed because both the brass and the lead I cast these bullets from were free.

Did you make the mold yourself or did someone make it for you? If so who did it? How did it perform in the .585 HE? Nice looking boolit and Eds building my rifle as we speak.

Looks like a very successful pour. I hope you have a area to recover some or you ingots after you shoot them. Enjoy your rediscovery of casting.

Don't even need to load them just throw them at the target.

Looks good, have fun. I think I figured to get just under 10 per pound of alloy with my 725 grainer for my S&W 500 mold.

Those look great I'd sure like a range report on your rifle.
I like the big bores.

looks like tumble lubed pills. Are you going to tumble again after 1st batch dries? Using Alox or Delux Alox?

All I can think is ouch when it comes to the recoil those things must have.

Matt85, I know this is an old thread brought back up, but if you are tuned in I'd sure like to hear how that rifle is shooting.
Thanks.

I thought my .458 used a lot of lead at ONLY 550 grains per each...

I'm very impressed. Reminds me of when I was part of a 155 Howitzer crew.

Matt85, are you still here?
We know it's an old thread, but there is some fresh interest in your bullets & rifle.
Thanks.
