I found this in a box of molds and reloading equipment that was given to me. The only
mark I can find is a number 4 stamped on top. The holes measure about .410.

Any ideas?

Now that's cool.
I'm going to take a wild stab at it and call it a civil war Miniball mold. Whatever it is, it's interesting!

For a 40 cal receptacle. Apparently fit always matters.

Definitely old medical! Doc's had to make their own "stuff" back in the day........pills, potions, ointments, suppositories.....etc!

That seems like a lot of suppositories to make at one time....

If you were a doctor who provided suppositories to patients, you would probably prefer to make a bunch at each 'session' ... somewhat like a bullet caster doesn't get all set up just to make enough to load his sixgun.

As for a practical use for the device (if you don't worry about it's 'collector value') ...

Perhaps it would be useful for casting uniform 'bullets' of tin, or tin-bearing solder, to be used when making alloys.

Thanks guys, A SUPPOSTORY MOLD!!! Who would have thunk it. Judging from the dirt and marks on it some uninformed heathen has been using it for lead.

I wonder what he was shooting them in?

Probably screwing little eye bolts(screws) in and using them for sinkers.

People in the olden golden daze had a lot of "problems" on a daily basis! I remember my grandmother having at lease 2 bottles of them in the cabinet. Glycerine-based was popular. Lots of other "patent" remedies in there also. My grandfather sold all kinds of witch's brews door to door when a young man. Two main ingredients.....alcohol and cocaine! And pine tar.

Boolits cast in that would be horrible. NO sprue cutter......NO flat bottoms! Accurate weight all over the map. You could use it to cast tin slugs as said above to let you add the magic metal to your melt in small known quantites. Good use of an olde tool.

Or cast up a bunch of suppositories for the neighbors!!!!!!!!! They will love you!!!!!!

The lack of handles or attachments is the key.

Years ago when I used to haunt eBay looking for boolit moulds suppository moulds showed up fairly frequently. The seller was always vague on the caliber.

Well, wouldn't you be??

No self-respecting person wants to admit that they are a .50 caliber, when they used to be a .22!!

A little lube and i'd bet cast glue and wax boolits would be possible. You could shave off the excess for a flat bottom.

There are bound to be a bunch of us, who have cabin fever, thats long past funny.
Threads like this prove it.
