Found these at the range the other day. I thinks they're some sort of lead alloy because they are heavy but I can't be sure. I'm new to casting so I figured that Id come here to ask the pros! I believe they are M208 Practice rounds. The thing is that they are very hard. I compared the hardness to some linotype but these are much harder. So what do you guys think, can I use these to harden up some lead?

Don't know what they are made of but maybe you can take one to a salvage yard and have it checked with an X-Ray gun.

They do look like inert m203 rounds.

Don't mix them with your alloy until you know they aren't zinc. If they are harder than linotype they might be zinc.

Put a handful in a pot and attempt to melt them. If they melt at around 700 degrees, cast some bullets with them. Experiment.

Put a drop of HCl (hydrochloric acid) on them. If they fizz, they're zinc.

After a moments thought these might be M203 practice/marker rounds. In that case they will be zinc.

Thanks for the help guys! Unfortunately I do believe they are lead. When doing a quick search for m203 zinc practice rounds they pop right up. I guess I'll have to toss em..

There are people here who would like to have them. One fellow will trade pound for pound lead for zinc.

Unfortunately, Shady Grady is all out of lead to trade for zinc. He will trade other stuff though. However, zinc is actually worth more than lead to a scrap metal dealer so I would trade them for lead from a dealer or just sell them for scrap if you don't want to keep them. Some people are having some luck casting boolits out of zinc though. They're just lighter and harder.
