View Full Version : 45-70 Versus 225# Boar

And the winner is....... 45-70.
I bought a 1895GBl about a year ago with the mission of making my own cast boolits and NEVER using a factory load....
Thanks to everyones help here i accomplished a great load. 405 gr RCBS 45-405-FN, cast from wheel weights and range scrap with a BHN of 11-12 range. Powder coated zombie green and fitted with a shiny copper gas check. beautiful bullet.. i sat it on top of 18gr of Blue Dot for a mild 1200 fps load. shot great and is a MOA gun all day long.

I carried it with me alot of deer season and never had a chance to whack anything with it.
Last night i Took the wife on her 1st real hog hunt. she told me about 5 months ago that she wanted to try hunting, after 20 years of marriage. Every Mans dream come true.
Due to the close proximity of the feeder to our stand (12-14 yards) i swapped guns with her and let her have the 45-70. well she effortlessly guided a 405 grain Green Cruise missile right into His Right ear..... Instant dirt nap. 1st Kill with that bullet, that rifle, and her 1st kill ever... to say i am a proud man is an understatement..
Thanks everyone for all of the wisdom you have bestowed on me.

If I were running a .45-70, that is exactly how I would do it, Blue Dot at around 1200 to 1300 fps. You should be happy for, and proud of your wife. Love the green copper checked bullet. Great post.

Along with the above posts, I offer congratulations, on the hunt and your new hunting partner...albeit after 20 years.
For your range conditions and your partner, your load was perfect... mild and effective.

One problem you over looked though.... Likely as not, your sweet 45-70 has been quietly "claimed"...
You have a couple of choices... either buy yourself another one, or start looking for another one to cover an anniversary or Christmas present.

Nice hunt and great hog.

Yep my wife shot her first deer with my 35 rem. and she refers to it as her gun.

Thanks for the congrats everyone. several of my friends said the same thing about her confiscating the rifle. She doesn't have a favorite yet and hasn't claimed any of mine yet... the kids have either their own guns or a favorite in my collection that they call dibs on.
My 7 year old has her own rifle, but like her brothers 243 cause it is a known killer. My 12 year loves them all but his 3 favorite is his 243, my 308 BAR with VX-3L, and the 45-70...my oldest boy prefers my 35 rem and my 300 WSM.. My personal favorite is that 35 Rem, damn thing don't miss... I really hope i don't LOSE my 45-70 but she's the boss. We will see.

Now you really speaking my language. Better hide that one.

I enjoy watching my wife shoot deer and turkey more than shooting them myself.

BIGRED,

Is there public land pig hunting in FL or is it a paid ranch hunt type of situation. My stepson moved to middle, west FL last fall and I am wanting to try a pig hunt with him. What are license requirements etc.

Wonderful. You are truly blessed. Anything joyfully shared with the wife is a good thing, but a .45-70----------------Can't imagine any better.

Or at the very least ........ I dare not sell it!!

There is alot of Public land hunting but it is usually seasonal. meaning it has to fall within an established game season. There is quota permits and special opportunity type permits you can get throw Florida Game Commission. there are alot of guide / outfitters in FL for hog hunting. Average price will be from $200 - $500. when i have the wife, kids, or a new hunter that wants to try hunting i usually take them to an outfitter.
Better odds of them getting an opportunity at one.
You do not need a hunting license to kill pigs in FL. if you are hunting them on Public Property during another game season you still don't need a license but it may be a smart idea to have an appropriate license for that game just to avoid any hassles with the warden.

I dug around for a while in the sand but to no Avail.... I really wanted that slug. but it was a clean in & out through the Cranium.. need to shoot one in the front chest facing me just so the bullet has 3-4 feet of meat to slow it down..

I butcher all of my own critters. i have killed alot of pigs and i have only had 1 that wasn't worth eating. older big nutted Boar i shot during archery season long ago. Meat turned gray when cooked, and had an odor.....

I have eaten them from 6-8# piglets up to a 323 pound boar. all tasted great, but the 75 pound or less ones are super yummy.
Yes this pig Yielded me 70 pounds of really nice clean Pork. Vacuum sealed and in the freezer along side a **** load of Venison..

Not for ST patty's but any of the powder coating guys will tell you that there are certain colors that are just awesome to look at. Zombie / aka Kawasaki green is one of those colors. Couple that with the bright copper Checks and man what a pretty bullet. also a good way to tell difference between bullet types. Different colors can = different weights and hardness.

Few reloading projects can offer less chance of going wrong than a 405gr. .45-70. You did right not to stretch the technology to the limit, especially for someone possibly not inured to recoil. 1200ft./sec. should make the best of powder coating, and in those conditions, where trajectory doesn't matter but a very rapid second shot might, should be effective against anything in the Americas or Europe.

The only firearm I every really disliked firing (and there were others with more of a reputation for it), was a light .45-70 carbine, loaded up to the limit.

Your beautiful wife, together with you in the woods, wearing camouflage, holding a lever action 45/70, next to a dead pig she just shot, on her first hunt, with boolits and ammo you hand made, has got to be right up there for ya eh.....?

:)

Pretty cool!

Glad to hear it. The quality of a hog's meat is directly related to it's diet. I had a 200+ boar last year that didn't pass the sniff test but I've eaten bigger boars and they were good. Years ago I had a huge hog processed, even the spiciest sausage mix couldn't make him edible. Shot a big sow a few months ago, smelled better than grocery store pork.

Glad your wife's first hog was a good one, any tusks? Couldn't tell from the pics.

FWIW, I've used the same load with plain flat base bullets. No need to gas heck or powder coat. Non sized tumble- lubed work just fine. But, those are some "purty" boolits!
btw, that ain't zombie green, that's BRITISH RACING GREEN!
Racey boolits, pig hunt'r, too!

Ammohead, I'm from FL originally, and if Bigred doesn't mind I'll answer your question. There are both scenarios you mentioned. Most of the public land hog hunting is during deer season, with a few exceptions. Private property is year round, no license required.

yes it had some good teeth on him. The Left side Cutter was snapped off about an inch above the jaw. The wetters were both around 2.5" outside. the right cutter was about 3" and really thick around. The 1st thing i noticed when it came outta the woods was the "lip curl" and the big mango's sticking out his back side.... Typical Boar.

It's a shame how many big boars have broken teeth. Last one I took to the taxidermist for a shoulder mount had really good teeth but he stole them, did a Euro mount for himself and put plastic teeth in my mount. He put the Euro mount in his display case, thought I wouldn't notice. Still think I should have whipped his butt for that decided against it. Figured I'd have to shoot his dog (100 lb pit) first and I liked the dog.
