Good Morning fellow casters:

As I noted in a couple other posts, I bought a used Lyman 450 Lube-Sizer on EBay. It was intact, but plugged with what looks like an Alox lube. It had set over the years almost like cement.

This morning I finished the task of cleaning it out and reassembling it. It looks sharp, and needs only the top cap for the lube reservoir. In the 450 was top punch #191 and die #457. A nice bonus. I tried to do my homework, but did not get a definitive answer.

Checking the Lyman website I learned that .457 is the diameter of the bullet; #191 refers to the top punch. I also checked and found mould 457191, highlighted in red below. So, "Riddle me this, Batman": Could this be the bullet for which the die and top punch were designed?

Look in a Lyman cast bullet book that top punch fits about 10 different cast bullets for the 45-70
and some other large caliber cast boolits.

Sounds like you have the correct ID. Should be popular with 45-70 shooters, if not to light weight.

That is one of the combinations.

Any large 45 caliber rifle could use that sizer depending on the bore dimensions, which determine bullet sizing. Not all 45 cal rifles are the same. My 45-70 used bullets sized to .460. I also have a .459 sizer for the same rifle left over from my load development. The nose punch refers to the contour of the bullet nose. As stated earlier, this may be a potential combination for that bullet number, but the bullet doesn't get a vote in determining sizing, it's all about the gun.
