I kind of remember reading someplace about forming 7.62x38R Nagant from .223.
I tried it once, and I couldn't get it.
Has anyone else heard of this, or done it????

I've heard of making 7.62x25mm Tokarev from .223, but not 7.62x38mmR Nagant. I form mine from 32-20 brass, or better yet, commercial 7.62 Nagant brass.

I found this on another forum.

Worked out a way (with a LATHE) to make usealbe full length nagant cases form .223 brass. will out line it for those interrested:

1. Size .223 case in .30carbine sizer...just until the soild part of the .223 is encountered. Will look like mini-belted magnum brass. Can't size the solid web of a .223 case.

2. Lathe off the belt. this will make the case into a rimmed case as you DO NOT lathe the rim (OK...the .223 is rimless...but once we take the body down, we leave a rim).

3. Cut case to nagant length.

I did try to make some of those cases, but found that the rim that remains after shaving down the 223 was just slightly too small to fit the chamber in my Nagant. They would slip in far enough that the firing pin wouldn't get a good strike.

I tried this. It was a royal pain, due to my skillset and available tools ;-) I have had good results making conventional style cartridges from 32-20 brass.

The rim is so tiny already, I wouldn't want to try anything that would be smaller. Plus real brass is easier to find these days than even the usual .32-30 substitute brass.

I've made quite a bit from 32-20, it works great. I was dubious about using .223, the only advantage would be it's much more common but apparently it doesn't work very well. It does work for the Tokarev 7.62x25 though.

I've been using 32-20, but I'd like to have something longer.
Any ideas on what else might work?????

Because of all the above reasoning, I asked my kids to get me 7.62 Nagant brass for Christmas; they gave me a hundred PPU. Did I tell you I love them?

Does Grafs or Buffalo Arms not ship to HI? They both have Privi brass in stock for about $40/100.

They both ship to us in the Upper 48.
I used to buy from Graf until a lady(?) called and gave me the riot act for not buying enough.
I have a C&R and used to get dealer discount. It wasn't much, but would help on the shipping cost.
Haven't ordered anything from them since then.
