Im thinking about purchasing one of the Henry made reproduction Henry lever actions in 44-40. I want it for some of the lever gun side matches at local clubs and just because the rifle interests me alot. Any info or issues with the one with the hardened brass frame model. I think it would also make a neat Ohio deer gun for the new rules. How smooth are they out of the box? Are they accurate? How do they do with cast? I may load black or smokless either or depending. I have other rifles from this era in reproductions. All are bigger caliber wise and none are repeaters. How does the Henry perform basically?

I have not tried black powder in mine but I have had zero issues with smokeless and cast. It does not seem to be very picky powder or bullets.

Is the tang drilled and tapped for a tang sight?

Wow, that's a lot of $$$ and I wish I could afford one just to shoot Black Powder cartridge out of.

I've got a H009B which is the 30-30 brass receiver. Prior to purchasing I was concerned about the brass myself so I called Henry. According to Henry the brass is as hards as or harder than steel. So far after over a thousand rounds of 30-30 pushing 18-19k fps the only change I can note is that the gun is now broken in and SMOOOOTH. Having said that, I'm not a fan of Henry triggers or at least the one in my 30-30. I've pulled it down and polished it and it got better but still not where I'd like it to be and I'm not the one to get it there.

The worst part of owning a Henry is preventing yourself from buying one of every gun they make. Although Uberti makes a Henry that's purdy I'd still opt for one with the Henry name on it made in USA.

It comes with a ladder sight. Mine doesn't seem to be too picky about bullets or powder. I am using .429 diameter bullets with Unique or Bullseye powder mainly because that is what my new Winchester 44/40 likes. The Henry shot everything from .427 to .429 with no problems. Looks good, shoots great, and is a lot of fun. Cannot go wrong.

Always wanted one too. Just always talked myself out of it somehow. Please post pictures when you get it!

I've a .22 Henry lever so this observation may not be what you want, but it's the smoothest, most accurate lever I've ever shot. I've made some incredible shots with it and it has become my favorite over some Winchester bolts, Marlin bolts & Remington pump. You just can't believe how smooth it is.

Oh I really want of these but decided I will get a Big Boy carbine in 44 instead. I have also got the Henry 45-70, 30-30 brass receiver and my son confiscated my BigBoy 45 LC and a 22 mag. everyone of my Henry rifles have a Skinner peep site and they are very accurate with boolits. great guns, great owner and they stand behind thier products. Post some, pics of your shooting expereince with the 44-40 for,us.

I think it is really not a reproduction of anything.. but it is a fine rifle.

If it is what you want just get it. You wont be sorry and after awhile it wont matter what it cost

The one Im looking at is a reproduction of the civil war era lever action it was originnaly in 44 rimfire but they make it in 44-40 now. Some of the local clubs have lever action side matches after the shillouette matches. And Id like one to play with and work with also.

So it is a repro of an 1860?

I'll check it out

So it is a repro of an 1860?

Yes and no. Henry calls it the "Original Henry" so other than it shoots 44WCF instead of rimfire I think it's about as close to the original as you can get.

No one makes the Henry repos in the 44 rimfire. Some are made in other calibers. The closest thing to the 44 Henry round would be to make it in 44 Special or 44 Russian.

I have never examined one up close but with it originally black powder 44 rimfire 44 magnum and some of the 44 special defensive ammo may be pushing the limits of action strength. 44-40 ( 44 wcf) would be in the right pressure range.

I think it is really not a reproduction of anything.

FWIW, The new HRA reverse-engineered a 150 year old original 1860 Henry rifle to make theirs.

FWIW, brass frame not withstanding, the new .44-40 Henry Model 1860 would have to have met the SAAMI standards for the cartridge, or it wouldn't be on the market as a functional rifle.

If I had the money to buy one, I'd make sure I had enough to get one of the engraved Deluxe models, like the one pictured above.........

Sent an e-mail to henry rifles today as to wood grade and type, lead time, ordering and options. No to find 44-40 brass and dies.

The dies are easy. Lee makes a good 4 die set with a collet factory crimp die. The brass on the other hand can try your patience, try Midway and you might get lucky. Order enough to ruin too, 44-40 takes some getting used to. Seat and crimp in separate stations or do like myself and others who've destroyed more 44-40 brass than we'd like to admit.

That list of straight walled cases has some entries that are tapered, at least were tapered when introduced.

Would definitely like to have one of those. I still have the dies and a bullet mold..Maybe brass too.
It looks like it should be better than the one Navy Arms offered..
But liking to have one doesn't mean I will be able to get one..
Too many other responsibilities now.
They do look good and promising though.
