I picked up a batch of 357 cases that I'm prepping and the cases have various cantelures on them. Some mid base and so low that there is no way that it effects bullet seating. Why cantelure the case and why is there such variation?

Done by ammo makers at diff. depths depending on bullet they are loading, to prevent bullet from being pushed in further.

Isn't that usually seen on factory wadcutter loads?

I think ALL factory 357 & 38 spec have the cannelure. Like Mr. Chambers said - some higher, some lower. Really makes no diff.

I have a bunch of brass from factory ammo with no cannelure.

The bad part is that cannelures blow out over a couple of firings. This means your case length changes over the first few firings. I segregate cannelured brass from non-cannelured brass as soon as I get it. I've grown to prefer new factory brass over buying once-fired for consistencys sake. After a few firings you could always trim it, but that's a pain. So I reserve cannelured brass for activities that don't require a high lever of precision. For long range silhouette, for example, I trim and prep all cased the same way I would do precision rifle cases, including primer pocket reaming and flash hole burr removal. Yup, I'm nuts.

Winchester also put cannelures near the base to differentiate 110 and 95 gr .38 Spl. Silvertip loads. They are identical in appearance, and would be a PIA to segregate by weight if mixed up before packaging. Shallow, so little effect on case length variations after firing.
