My neighbor has 700 pounds of pb lead, in sheets that are about 24" wide and 1/8" thick. The question is hardening. How much chilled shot should be used to get a 10 to12 bhn? I have been reading about antimony and it says that it is some what toxic to mess with. What are your thoughts on combining lead and antimony? And the dangers?

Have you tried using the alloy calculator free download provided by this website? That will give you a close estimate.

According to the alloy calculator, 2000# of chilled shot to 700# Pb for a BHN 10.

50# of Rotometals superhard would I think, be cheaper. And be easier to handle. BHN 10.4.

Unless, of course, you have a ton of chilled shot already.

Wish you were closer, I wold trade you straight across your lead for my WW ingots. I was just in Arizona last week, too.

Same thought crossed my mind and I'm practically his neighbor compared to the rest of the members....

smaller sized magnum shot is 5-6% antimony with some arsenic in it.
I'd buy 700 pounds of that if I were gonna try this [which I wouldn't] and mix it 50-50 and throw in 1% tin to help everything along.
shot is running about $45.00 for a 25 pound bag right now so $1400 should even you out.
except for dealing with trying to melt down a bunch of tiny graphite covered lead.

I'd opt to buy 230 pounds of lino-type and mix it all together at 3-1 yours to it and have an alloy of 1/3/96 and call it a day.
or swap even up for ww alloy, or for some lino-type at a ratio.

First off, grab the lead and kiss your neighbor. Antimony isn't the way to approach this. Clip on wheel weights and/or linotype is a better path to alloying and increasing BHN. OR...you can ship it to me and I'll return WW/Antimony in like quantity. Big fan of pure lead I am. USPS flat rate can move 70# cheap enough.

Really solid advice. Couldn't have said it better myself.

230# of lino vs 50# of superhard. Which is cheaper and easier to handle? Which is easier to obtain with a guaranteed analysis?

Also, where is the original poster? If one asks a question, one should respond to answers.

Lino generally goes for around 2$ shipped in the S&S section here

& http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/30_antimony_70_lead.htm shows the superhard from rotometals for 19.99 for 5 lbs including freight. So best guess would be go with rotometals.

OR just trade with a few of the guys that have already offered, if you can make a deal that works for everyone.

Sorry about that scottfire, I don't get on the computer on Sunday. A lot of good info coming back to me. I had a pretty good idea about what to do but just wanted to confirm it on here, as I trust that the answers I get are good. GRUMPA contacted me and we have a deal going. Thanks for all the input. 45-70 Chevroner.
