Do you shoot your 9mm target or PPC loads full speed? it seems to me that with the glock17, 124rn, 5.7gn power pistol(max load), the flash and recoil are quite harsh. Maybe a lighter load would be more precise and put less strain on the wrists and fingers when shooting a lot of ammo?

How do you guys do it?

I run loaded to the gills. Maybe a different powder will have a different recoil impulse or possibly a lighter bullet. You might also look into 147 gr bullets with start loads. Accurate and easy on the shooter.

I used to shoot really reduced loads. The thinking being getting back on target quicker. Would have the occasional stove pipe. Not worth it. I now shoot loads more toward the mid-range for 100% functionality. They are not max. but work a lot better.

Damn, you are shooting hot ammo: my current go-to .357 mag load is way milder that your 9mm load :D

But seriously. If you do not like the flash and recoil: choose a fast powder and a mid-range load. The gun will probably function perfectly. And if you want to know the limits ( cycling the action), work the load DOWN.

My favorite powder for 9mm (120 gr lead bullet) has been Vihtavuori N320, burn rate of Red Dot is quite similar. Power pistol is little slower but if it ignites easily, you could just reduce the load..?

yeah PP flashbangs way too much, but I just happen to have 2 pounds left.

What should I go with next? VV powder is too expensive imo?
should I at least drop to a "moderate" load not wanting to go "super mild", but maybe a bit less bang would help me shoot better?

I will try this. That would be a 1000 FPS "mid load", below the 5.7 1100 fps max load, and 4.3 900 fps load.

Will probably be easier on me and the pistol. Will report once I have time to try it. Have to cast some 124rn this weekend and hi-tek those.

My glock shoots average with plated 355 ammo, and shot really well with 358 boolits, but I just didnt succeed yet preventing leading. Will re-try hi tek this weekend.

my 9 is a small 45..[shrug]
it still knocks steel plates over and the holes in the paper are there too.

I have had great luck with 115 grain FMJ or 120-125 boolits and HS-6 powder in my G34. I use 6.0-6.2 grains for a very reliable and accurate load.

No, I did not mean you should buy VV powder. Buy powder that is EQUAL to N320.

I was hoping that some of the American members would tell you more, because I don't have enough experience with American powders. I have only used (in pistol / revolver loads) couple of pounds of Hodgdon HS-6, HS-7, H447 and H110.. and some Accurate powders. But that is it. Vihtavuori is THE powder brand here.

After looking for over a year, I finally found some BE-86 locally. Alliant says the max charge for a 124 gr cast RN is 5.7 gr. It was small flakes like Bullseye, no flash, metered very nicely and burned clean, no smoke and felt like more muzzle rise. I started at 5.2 gr for 5 rounds to make sure it would cycle properly and was really surprised at the difference in sound and kept getting a hit on the trigger finger, even with the starting load. I tested at 5.4 then 5.7 and it felt like it had some oomph to it, even at the starting load. Pretty wild, I liked it. I fired some with TL 356-124TCs then 356-120-TC's. I ended up loading 50 at 5.3 gr and they don't 'feel' weak at all. I haven't put them over the chrony yet.

I've been trying CFE pistol with cast 124 gr. RN and still have to find a load that is easy on my arthritic hand. I do like this powder and am going to try it in some .38 special cast TC.[smilie=1:

I have been working up a softer load for a WWII P-38, Use the Lee 105 grain SWC, cast 50/50 wheel-weights and range lead, sized .357, lubed with lithium/beeswax soft lube over 4.6 grains of Red Dot powder. Doesn't batter the old war horse, feeds, fires, ejects and shoots to factory fixed sights on the P-38. I like this one!
