Just under a buck. Some of the gas houses would have sales at .88 or such when i was a teen. Never more than a dollar for regular. Gas is $1.95 now for regular.

During the Gas Wars $0.19 Same here. I still remember when my Dad took an older neighbor to the store and he offered to buy gas. At the gas station he said "A dollar's worth of the cheapest!".

That was the normal price when I was 16. But the price would drop down to 12¢ to 15¢ a gallon during the gas wars. But that was 50 years ago.

Worked in a service station (yep...we even gave service) in the 50's...had 2 stations across from each other...loved the gas wars...think the lowest I ever saw was about 15 cents or so a gallon...we gave double green stamps and the guy across the street gave away dishes...bit different than today...we checked under the hood...washed the windows and checked the tires if asked...all for 15 cents a gallon...when someone came in and asked for "five" we knew it was for five gallons as $5 would not fit in the tank in those days.

30 cents for a gallon of gas. One hour of minimum wage would buy 4 gallons of gas, and that was AFTER taxes were taken out of my check.

Pack of smokes was around 20 cents at the PX.

The cheapest I remember was 27.9 in 1972 in SE Minnesota and the cheapest I remember paying was thirty something a gallon. My dad talks about dating my mom in 1950 and paying 11 cents during the gas wars in central NJ.

Funny this comes up today. Over the weekend Smokey and the Bandit was on TV. They filmed part of the movie where I grew up in GA. I called my son in to watch a bit of it so I could show him a segment that my Dad and I got to watch being filmed and a couple of other places that were right up the road from the house. During our watching they showed the sign at a truck stop and diesel was .47 a gallon. The movie was filmed in 1977 when I was 12.

Cheapest gas I can ever remember buying was .89 a gallon. I pumped a lot at the store where I worked as a teenager for less than 1.25 a gallon.

Somewhere around .15 - .17 during price wars, maybe .22 regularly, and that wasn't the low octane stuff of today.

I can remember being able to pick up pop bottles along the road to put enough gas in my 55 Ford to get to school & run around town. It was great when I could put $1 in at a time.

Being the whipper snapper I am , I remember vividly my Dad having a fit because he had to pay 75 cents in side for the white gas he paid 33 cents for in the pump just the week before. I also remember later on my folks being twisted up because it 65 cents . My personal best was 85 cents. About that same time we were buying 130 octane AVGAS for right at a buck a gallon.

as a teenager in the 60's gas was around $.30 a gallon. for some reason, in a town of about 1600 there was a Texaco, Amoco, Save-X, and two Esso's(Exxon to you whippersnappers). the Esso's got to feuding & started a war that all the others had to join & the price got down to 17 cents before it was all over.

Gas was usually around 23 cents when I got my first set of wheels, but gas wars would get it down to 19 cents once in a while. I never paid any attention to the cost before that.
The lowest I ever saw was in the 80's in Austin Texas. The radio station offered a prize to the station that sold it the cheapest (one day only). Two stations got down to 0 before the day was out. lol
In the 70's I checked the air in all 4 tires, added if needed, checked the oil, added if needed and washed the windshield on a lot of cars that bought a bucks worth of gas. I had one gal that came EVERY day and got the works for 50 cents worth of gas, price at that time was 49 cents and my wages was 3 cents. lol

Late 50s, 17.9 to 21.9 tax included and we still used some farm gasoline--did not own diesel tractors until '64, and farm (non taxed) was usually 9-10 cents. Minimum wage .50/hr. We primarily used propane in our tractors and non taxed it was 4-6 cents delivered to our farm tanks. We ran a lot of non tax gas and propane in our farm trucks.
In '65 I took a job with U of Nev/Reno and gas in Reno was 300% of what I was paying in Texas.

When I was 16, gas was about 21.9 cents a gallon at the cheap station on a 'gas war'.
I think the normal price of leaded regular was about 24.9 or so in small town central
Florida in the middle '60s. The phony gas shortage in 1973 jumped it up to about 65
cents and that shocked us, the price almost tripled in a short time.

Imagine if gas jumped to $6 now. Same mental feeling. Remember a new VW bug was
$1800 and a nice Chevy sedan was $2500-3000.

Well, I'm 32, and the town I live in, and grew up in, has always run higher than the rest of the state. However, long about 1999, I remember gas being $0.89 at the local station. I could fill my 1979 Dodge Ramcharger with a 360 for cheap, considering it had a 35 gallon tank.

Most expensive was in Trona, CA during a trip to Death Valley. Thankfully it was just a top off at $6.99/gallon and my jerry cans were full for the trip.

Just recently, gas went below $2 again, but is back to $2.30 or so. No rhyme or reason.

Yep, the youngsters that never new gas less than 89 cents, that is a bummer.

Of course, the youngsters will not know why "Super 8" and "Motel 6" got their names.

Because Motel 6 cost $6 for a room and Super 8 was $8.88 for a room.

We had a new Motel 6, when it was still $6.00 a night. Across the street was a Sambo's restaurant where a cup of coffee was 10 cents w/unlimited refills.

Sambo's went out of business a few years after somebody decided that because the name and type of food the restaurant featured had a basis or association with the old children's book "The Story of Little Black Sambo" (which technically was about an Indian child), that the entire restaurant chain should be considered an affront to all blacks everywhere.
