I guess I am starting to mellow out as I get a little older. I was flipping channels last night before supper and found the Porter Wagoner Show on RFDTV. I really enjoyed watching it and hearing the music. The guest was Roy Clark. Man, could he ever play the guitar.

Here lately, I have been listening to Corb Lund, Charlie Robison, Carol Hayes, Ryan Bingham and the like. I guess, ol' porter wagoner and the boys might have had an influence on those fellers.

As a kid, I can remember my parents watching the show (while I rolled my eyes).

My parents loved the Porter Wagoner show. Some of those old songs that he would talk through like "Skid Row Joe" and "My Last Two Tens" can really bring a lump in your throat. Gotta go, I think Sadie is calling.

I think she might just be younger and slimmer there, the rest seems to come with a little extra padding.

Dad never missed the Porter Wagoner show, The Grand Old Opry Show or Hee Haw.

Ok, never mind. It would have been interesting to see how they developed on their own as she got older...

It was fun to hear a female country singer that sang a song that you could hear all the words. Now days the female singers just scream. I don't listen to county much anymore because of that.

Roy Clark couldn't read music, he either played by ear or memorized the song, depending on the situation.

Well JB Weld, I don't know so much about mellowing out (not speaking of you), but maybe as we get older, we just appreciate the things that we don't have anymore. Kind of like Bonanza, High Chaparral, John Wayne movies, etc. I live in Tulsa, and got to see Mr. Clark a few years ago. I escorted him out of the vehicle and through the back door in to where he was attending/speaking. He is still a hoot. I had snuck him in the back door of a gig a long time ago. He had just had back surgery not long before this time Anyway, me being a little older than a lot of folks, and talking to Mr. Clark, as we got to the door, knowing how he likes to kid a little bit, I leaned towards him and said, "Ain't like this is the first time you ever snuck in the back door huh?" He stopped, and looked at me and laughed, then leaned over to me and said, "Yeah, your right, but not very many people know." We both laughed, and I told him it was an honor for me to be able to escort him through the back door again. When he was leaving the event, I escorted him out of the back door again into his vehicle. He shook my hand, and told me, "It was good to see you again." and winked at me. As far as I am concerned, he is and has always been the best guitar player of all times. Thanks for your post. Brought back some happy memories.

Saw Porter Wagner at the Grand Old Opry about thirty years ago. Was caught off guard when about two hundred young women rushed up to the stage to get a hand shake. Looked like 1964 when the Beatles hit town. Except he was not young. He put on a great show and looked like he had a good time doing it. Went to about three of those shows down in Nashville over the years. All great entertainment. And I'm not even a big country western fan.

My time frame for music and tastes were rooted mostly in the '70's and Rock.

I also liked the country rock and performers such as Waylon, Willie, Marshal Tucker etc.

After that I liked some of the contemporary country for a time ........ but it seemed it just went on and on .....&......Todays contemporary country artists just don't do it for me ......... and this rap garbage is terrible ......

I can like the 70's rock some ....... but it's lost it's luster as well. Some songs are still good for me as well as some of the earlier contemporary country is still good ........ Vince Gill, the Mandrell sisters etc.

But the country of earlier ..... the Porter Wagner vintage and all that ........ is CLASSIC!

I might of tired of it as a kid but now ..... it's timeless and real music. Even in the day ..... I would watch the program with Jerry Clower as a comedian ...... good music and good comedy. A neighbor and I are real fans of Clower's work and we do this thing on the phone every time that gets us laughing! It relates to one of his stunts. When I call ...... he always knows who's just called without anouncing my name!!

I also watched enough of Hee Haw in the day to get a world of respect for Roy Clark and Buck Owins. Great performers. Also salt of the earth as well. A lot of those rock folks ....... you might need to fumigate them before you would let them on your place.

One exception however ....... and you'll argue with me on this ...... Mick Jagger ........ yeah ... WHO would of thunk it?

A gal that worked at our ranch for a couple of years had a back ground in music recording ..... and she met him in Seattle WA once ...... she had it in for him too ....... wanted to jab him about being out of key all the time ......... well ......... she said ....... when she found herself face to face ........ she could not! Said he was the most charming warm guys she'd met ...... lost all of her hostility right there! LOL!

I guarentee you it was not her looks either ...... a mud fence .... I tell ya!

Me...... I'd still spray him as a precaution!

The Porter Wagner show was one of my favorites too. In 1976 or so I met Dolly Parton in a Denny's restaurant in Vancouver BC. We used to stop there for coffee after work at the mill, and that day there were no seats open, but Dolly and her people were sitting in one half of a large "wraparound" both. She saw my friend and I were looking for a place to sit and she graciously offered to let us use the empty half. Very friendly and pleasant lady.
