Depends on what style you are looking for. For Jazz, Al Dimeola. For hard rock, Jimmy Page. For a more cerebral rock, David Gilmore. For Blues, B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughn. All depends on the music you are listening to.

As a blues guitarist Roy Buchanan has influenced me most.

No one favorite. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana not in that order. Love them all. You can tell I'm a little "old school".

No way to answer for me. So many are, or were, good. Each has a unique style and trying to say one is "best" is pretty hard.
I will always have a soft spot for so many like Randy Rhoades, Angus Young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and so many more. My choices are based more on the style of music than the particular player. I have a fondness for late 60's to 80's era hard rock and some metal. Jazz just isn't my thing despite the talent in that arena.

There are lots of good guitar players, but only a few that can write good riffs. For example most say Hendrix was the best player, but Page was the best writer of classic rock. IMO the best player is one that can write good music also.

Clapton won guitarist of the Millennium ..Not too sure I agree with that..but he was very influential..
As a guitarist, I like Jeff Beck better
But..
It was Buchanan that influenced me to play guitar..

I like too many to pick just one.. All the good blues cats, and the brits, and of course Rev. Billy Gibbons, and don't forget the Skynyrd genre either, all the good ol' southern rockers have melted over into country. It's like making gumbo, some of this, little of that, but it's all AMERICAN MUSIC, Made In USA!

Playing blues is a pretty hard life.

Depends on the mood I am in, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, Mark Kneofler and a swack of sidemen and studio guitar players who don't get credit on albums but were session players for Stax, Sun, and the Motown recording studios.
Like the guy who did the guitar riff for Van Morrison and Brown Eyed girl.
Or the guitar player who came up with the riff for My girl.
Or Lynyrd Skynyrd -Sweet Home Alabama.
Or the guitar players we missed like the guy in sublime Santeria

So many great guitar players..and they all make my life better..I guess I evolved into playing jazz over the years..It is an acquired taste, and I can understand how many don't like the wandering improvisation..
I was influenced by Wes Montgomery,Pat Metheny, and Jim Hall.
My wife and I usually play older jazz standards..Misty,My Funny Valentine, My Foolish Heart, Blue Bossa. Autumn Leaves..
My Favorite Things and songs like that.. I am fortunate to be married to a gifted musician..
Give me a 335,a Telecaster, or a Les Paul and I am happy..
That and a good tweed amp..
If I were rich I would play a Gibson L5..but I am poor .so the 335 will do ..
The 335 is my favorite anyway.. I can play any style with that guitar..
That and a telecaster and I could sell the rest..but I really would miss the Les Paul

Great thread. I've listened to most artists mentioned, and enjoy listening to most that have been mentioned. It's kind of hard to have a favorite, depends on the mood I'm in at the time what I want to listen to.
A guy at work recently mentioned a "famous" musician that lives not far from me, it was news to me. Seems Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane), owns and operates a "farm" just a short distance from me. Googled to learn more, he runs a guitar and music camp with guitar "workshops". One of the staff is Tommy Emmanuel, whom I wasn't familiar with. Checked them out on youtube, wow! Even if it's not "your" type of music, they are both pretty enjoyable to watch and listen to.
But...A favorite? Just too many good ones, alive and passed.

I think if {Gatton} had good vocals it might have made a difference in his success . . . I would still rather listen to Buchanan play. He had the vocals and the soul....

amen, brother!

so many great players listed here . . . and lovin' all the links to some names i've never heard of!

89 posts and hundreds of amazing musicians before somebody remembered Danny . . . all at once he makes you want to learn to play and quit the instrument . . . you don't get a nickname like "The Humbler" for nothing:

CharGar, I remember reading that Segovia back in the day once recorded 48 tracks over a three day period and he hit EVERY note and did not have to do ANY retakes. The term Master would not do him justice.

Many great guitar players were listed but no one said a thing about Robert Cray.

The TRUE artists do NOT need electricity.

All Andre needed was a simple chair and the rest of the stage was bare.

Heck they can even camp out with Wack soup I back on his mountaintop with the one holer and no elektrikcity and still sound great.:kidding:

Mike Campbell (T.P. & Heartbreakers) - one of those guys who makes it look easy.

Roger McGuinn (Byrds) - I'm a sucker for the sound of a 12-string Rick.

Edge and Steve Clark - I'm of an age where my discovery of rock & roll was ushered in with a discovery of U2 and Def Leppard. Clark's passing was for me one of those "hits", like Lennon's was for my parent's generation or Cobain's was for the kids a few years younger than me.

When my inner air-guitarist needs a celebratory cutting loose, he is usually playing Van Halen's Everybody Wants Some, and is dressed as a cheeseburger.

Jimmy Page. 'nuff said.

I remember seeing Roy Clark playing the old Bonanza theme song on Hee-Haw (I think) another great player

One of my favorite jazz artist is Pat Martino.. His was a virtuoso at a young age..He had a brain aneurism and totally lost the memory of how to play guitar.. He had to relearn, and relearn he did..
He is still a Master after all that.. I have the deepest respect for the man and his music..

On a different page.. I got to see Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush in recent years.. WOW what a guitar player..

I have gotten old and lazy.. I do love to playing my Les Paul..It is like driving a Cadillac. It almost plays itself..Nothing like a telecaster.. You best have it together when you step out with one of those in your hand.. No where to hide..

About a year ago I got to see Steve Hackett do the Genesis revisited tour..Truly amazing and much better than the original and from the 70's except I would have liked Peter Gabriel on vocals..
Still one of my very favorite guitarist of all times..

Got to see Jeff Beck play several years ago..He is also one of my favorites..
