What are your deer hunting results with something like these in 357 Maggie and boolits out of Lever gun and PISTOLA.

Do NOT care about other 35 caliber cartridges or other boolits.

when I got my first handgun a ruger old model in 357 45/8 barrel. I bought a mold it was for the 358429 I hand dipped them lubed them. I loaded them into .38 cases using 11-12 gr. of 2400. I used .38 cases because that was what I could get. 357's were few and expensive. now that load dropped many groundhogs feral dogs and a deer or two. that same load works good in my Rossi 92.


with the 358429 in 357 cases you have to load them deeper and crimp on the front band. when doing this I lubed the crimping groove also.

That depends on the cyl. length/gun.

Don't know the #'s but killed 2 deer with a 38 special and 150 grain SWC, 1 out of a converted Win 1892 by [Snaps in Michigan?] and a Model 14 S&W Combat Mater Piece at about 7 yards with DA shot using a Lee 150 Grain SWC .

I`ve killed probably my fair share of deer here on the coastal plains of NC & a big deer here is 175# ,I`ve weighed 2 that was 207# & 211# but the average grown deer comes in the 140 range & any 140-170gr boolit does well IF placed where it needs to be !

recovered boolits number 2 , 1 was a high hit in the spine, a 358156 recovered weight was 137gr & mangled purty good, the second I snibbed the facing shoulder blade & it flattened out backwards on the other ,this 1 was a 358429 & recovered weight was 151 gr

All the others were pass thrus & even though I look for some in the dirt (angled down from tree stand) & in trees I never found another

All these were going close to 1200 fps powered by 2400.

I feel with any weapon a hunter has a responsibility to stay in his/hers limits to make clean/humane kills!
& if this is done hunting will be more enjoyable & memorable in a good way.

My first handgun deer was Christmas eve back when I was 14yrs old , borrowed Granddaddy`s S&W model 10, hid in a wolf pine next to a field, wind was cold & hitting me rite in the face & the peg horn walked rite to me down a pasture fence , I let em have a 158 gr round nosed in the ribs at 4 yds !! took 20 minutes for the adrenaline to subside so I could stand up !!!

I was hooked on handgun hunting from that day until I die !

358429 over 7 grains of Herco in the 357 = 1100fps out of my M-28 w/6"barrel.
Dead deer when I do my part. Can't ask for much more.

I've hunted with both, in both solid and HP configurations. Generally speaking, I saw little difference in performance between the two, with a couple of exceptions. (No real difference was noted with HPs; we seemed to see that more in smaller game.)

First, the 358156 has a flatter trajectory; this can come into play occasionally with shots that might stretch the range of your firearm. Second, as Bob208 pointed out, you may need to crimp the 358429 on or over the front shoulder in order for it to chamber, or to feed in your repeater. If these aren't factors that concern you, the choice would probably to go with whichever one is more accurate in your handguns and rifles.

From what I've seen in the game field--and between my siblings and I, and our friends, we've probably taken a couple hundred deer with one or the other--there just isn't a lot of difference between the two. SOP for my brothers and I is to aim through the deer toward the opposite shoulder. If we can't get a shot like this, we wait til we can. With those limitations, the .357 can be an acceptable cartridge for shots at reasonably close range (say, within a hundred yards or so), on game up to a couple hundred pounds live weight. Usually, the lungs/heart/large blood vessels are hit. The deer are normally found within a hundred yards or so of where they were standing when shot. I can only recall witnessing a few shots where the deer were dropped where they stood; every one I can recall was an accidental spine shot.

Most of the folks I know would select the 358156 for deer-sized game (and smaller). I think we all settled on the 358156 or similar 150-160 grain SWCs because they would feed through almost any rifle, and when crimped in the crimp groove, would chamber in any revolver.
