View Full Version : Is It Cold Where You Live?

I have lived through winters where the weather has been colder but even at -3° it seems like the cold has been especially harsh & cutting.
Must be a sign of getting old where old people have a harder time regulating their body temperature.
Just out to the barn to start the tractor to move some snow so the neighbor can get to work.

Well always remember it is better to look DOWN at the snow than UP at the lid.

Went to the store the other day when it was around +10 and no wind.

Came out about an hour later and the temp dropped to -4 and the wind was about 30MPH.

Left all of the frozen food in the car till the next day when I could put on warmer clothes.

Funny how age will remind you to be careful.

Its a bit nippy here & I'm doin pretty much same thing currently -5 and a bit of a blow the wind chill is gonna hurt a lil outside doing welding repairs fixin iron gates and such today the first stop is a slide gate got hit by a car and I got a whole condo building full of folks who can't get out of the parkin lot to get to work.
Do me a favor push that snow in front of my lane so I got a good excuse to stay home :-)

Local weatherman is callin' for 15 below tonight. If we don't call it off and everything starts I'll be four and a half miles out on lake Erie in the morning.

My friend caught a 13.5 pound Walleye yesterday. Time to go Fishin'.

My friend caught a 13.5 pound Walleye yesterday. Time to go Fishin'.

Boy, it's been 12-15 years since I've been ice fishing.
I'm glad that Algore has fixed globalwarming and there's ice now to fish on.

Did I ever tell the story of the time I went ice fishing and ended up with a minus one fish?
True story:
I went ice fishing on lake Erie with two other guys Bill & Jim.
After a full day of fishing, Bill had 7 perch & 2 walleye.
Jim had several walleye & some perch, I had -0- zilch, nada.
When we got ready go I was helping Bill load his fish in a sack, when I grabbed up the last walleye he had caught, it came back to life, twisted out of my hands, hit the ice and disappeared into the hole.
I looked at Bill, his eyes blinking with disbelief and he said, "That was my fish, you lost my fish, . . . you owe me a fish . . ."
Not only did I spend a whole day enduring the elements, and caught no fish, I came home with a minus 1 fish.

It's currently 4 degrees out, w/o the wind chill. If I didn't have to go out I wouldn't, but I have a appointment at the dentist in a few hours. I'll stop at the library on the way back and return a couple of books and pick up a dvd that I had requested. Better stop and get gas while I'm out, less than a quarter tank in the truck.

I am glad deer season is over!

We take advantage of the cold weather to thaw out our freezer. We simply load everything into laundry baskets and set them out in our breezeway. Few hours later, when the freezer is all thawed out and dry, we bring every thing back in. WeatherBug says it's -1 F, with a windchill of -15F right now.

I was born within 50 miles of Fargo North Dakota. I've been east, south and west but something always pulled me back here.

Cold? This year? This morning was -19 and about as cold as it has been, but I don't call one morning of -19 cold, no sir.

3 weeks of -20 in the daytime with -30's at night, yeah, that is getting cold. After a couple of weeks cars don't start, stuff breaks.
It is cumulative, and sometimes the only real cure is to haul it in to where it can be heated up above freezing.

Now I know for many of you this has been a rough year. I feel for you, truly I do.
It is one thing for us up here to deal with it. But we know all the tricks. Like the long underwear that goes on in October and doesn't come off till June!
Most of the time it is light weight cotton + Polyester blend that breaths well. But if the weather is looking like headed for -40 for a month, or if I'm having to work outside then the wool stuff comes out.

Houses up here are insulated, have very GOOD Furnace's, 80% effecient or better. And the smart folks either have a generator, or an alternative heat source.

I had a furnace quit on my after 2 weeks of cold weather, happened around 5 on friday night. So no real access to help or parts till monday morning.
Kitchen stove is natural gas, so I set the oven for 375 and opened the door. Kept us alive and kept the house from freezing up.

Cold is just another obstacle, not much different than a mountain or a river. Be smart, plan ahead, plan for stuff to go wrong.

Young and stupid me, within 10 miles of the Canadian Border, -37 below, it is friday night, I'm out of smokes, truck won't start, and I'm feeling the urge for people. 3 mile walk one way to the edge of town and a bar. Got some smokes, had one light drink, spent an hour talking to people, and walked back. Cold won't kill you if your careful. But you need to have the right tools.
And you have to have a FIRM grip on yourself.

-18 here right now but no wind yet. I didn't look at the temp when I left the house and would have guessed closer to -5 but that's how much difference no wind makes. I can work outside with -20 and no wind with little problem but 0 and a 20 mph wind seems twice as cold. Actually over the course of a week or more one becomes acclimated to it. Sadly it only takes about a day to get acclimated to warm weather but a week when the temp drops back down again. I'd rather have 2 solid weeks of -20 than have it get up to 20 or 30 every 4th or 5th day. Those 20 degree days really screw up your system. It also helps that I keep my house at 61 degrees. Thank god for my viking blood......

When I was younger my brother and I went ice fishing at LOW and slept overnight in the back of my truck. Overnight temp dipped below -25. No supplimental heat just our -30 sleeping bags. Slept like a baby.................

Its cold here too, but nothing like you guys in the North are having. Its +30 now but was +15 this morning. Wind has been 5 to 15 all week. Those of us that work outdoors get used to it, buy the indoor guys sufffer when its that cold here. Northern temps would close my State down! I've hunted in Canada when the high for the day was -15. I feels a bit schizophrenic here, I spent my first 35 yrs in Wisconsin and went from there to a city in the Los Angeles area for 10 years. Last year didn't have enough gas, this year, had way too much . Yep "fool me once", is all it gets. The rest is on me. Ice is impossible to deal with around here.Just don't go down the hill, that's the part people don't listen too. Then they ask for help to pull them out.I say no I'm not going to tear my truck up getting your camry, ptcruiser, rav4,out.I may get stuck too. I just like to ride the atv around the village. Had couple people try and stop me wanting rides.I just kept own going.Went other ways. If I know you I will help you. I'm not gloating, cause I know the shoe is my foot more years than those of you who are getting hammered right now. But I can't miss the opportunity to tell a little cold weather humor story.
It was winter of 77/78 and it made the old timers shut up about 48/49, it didn't get above zero from mid November till the end of January. Most days highs were in the -20's and the snow and wind were really bad. I was working for an ag irrigation company and it just didn't pay to try any field work. I think the only field job we in that time span was because a farmer needed to spend some money on eqt. to help on his tax bill and to get the break it had to installed before 12/31. So we were all cooped up in the shop and stepping on each other trying to find stuff to stay busy. One day at coffee break we were sitting around when a mobile home moving truck pulling a trailer house came down the county road past the shop. One fellow looked at that and said," You know, I've seen it cold over the years, but I ain't never seen it so cold you had to tow your house down the road to pull start the furnace".

-14 in SW MN at 6AM when I checked on the cat that is sick. Weather station is on my desk so I glanced at it, dumped another bucket of corn in the stove and crawled back into bed until noon(went to bed at 4am, I am a serious night owl). Wind chill was hitting minus 40. Went through 140 pounds of corn in the last 24 hours. For some reason it just feels cold in the house but it isn't. Could be the head cold I am fighting. Was supposed to go to physical therapy but called in and said I was staying home, girl at the desk said 3/4 of the patients canceled today.

I have seen colder here but usually not with the wind we had the last 3 days. Deep cold usually means calm. 2 weeks with highs sub zero is common here most winters. Guess as I get older and my body being so beat up I don't tolerate it like I used to!

When I was younger I winter camped several times up in the boundary waters to ice fish. Fun times, wake up and the tent was coated with frost inside because someone let the stove go out. We had a nice wall tent with 7 family members so it wasn't super roughing it. Coldest was -42 one morning up there. Still went out ice fishing that dy, did well in fact because nobody else was out on the lake making a racket with snowmobiles and we snowshoed out.

Yes it has been cold here, we have easily gotten twice the amount of 0 or below 0 temps this month than what would be considered normal. We always get some below 0 temps but seldom for this length of time. Tonight we could be setting a record, temps of 14 below are expected in Worcester, thats about 12 miles up the road from here. Wind chill is expected to be around 23-25. Official temps there are taken at the airport which is about 500 ft in elevation about the surounding city so down in the city it is usualy warmer. Right now at midnight it is 5* and going down.

Well, Saskatchewan does have the reputation for cold winters, but this one has been very strange. We have had repeated thaws over the last couple of months as we are just on the edge of the "Chinook Winds" that come out of the rocky mountains and thaw the western prairies. Today we are just at melting but tonight things are going to 20 below zero. How is that for contrast!! Not the best shooting weather, my local range has a nice greasy muddy slope to drive down so when it thaws the range is off limits.

Hi...

Cold again today...-2F when I got up for work at 3:30AM...warmed up to 2F by the time I got to work at 6:00AM. The weather liar on thr radio said the high was 17F today.

I run a receiving dock...yesterday and today I could see my breath on the dock (inside) all day long.

This is the first year I have really minded the cold...it seems that once I get chilled, it takes hours to really feel warm again. My hands and feet ache from the cold.

Sitting here in the den with a hot cup of Earl Grey tea, I am comfortable for the first time since I left the house early this morning.

i get to do it all over again tomorrow and then by the time I get home we should be in the midst of a predicted 3-5" snowstorm lasting through Sunday morning and ending as a rain/ice mix.

Warmer than expected, I had friends go through the ice last weekend. We are forecast for snow and cold for two days this weekend then back up to near 50. Country will burn up if we don't get some moisture. When it is too warm to ice fish on valentines day, you wonder why you live where you do.

and if it freezes, there is a core of more concentrated sap that is still liquid
inside a layer of ice. Never have seen it freeze all the way through. WAY
colder than normal this time of year.

We had a nice warmup a few weeks back. We are now paying the price for that dang groundhog.

It has been a cold winter so far. Dry but cold.

It isn't as cold as some of you guys up north have, but it's damn cold for here. The deer are coming up to the house looking for some thing to eat. They are having a tough time getting through the crusted snow for acorns.

Our natural gas co is making a killing.

July 1 we had a 25% increase then in Jan they tacked on another $25.oo per month fee.

Because of the natural gas increase our electric utility took a 33% increase the first of July.

Oh yes my SS check MIGHT be boosted by 1%

Two years ago we were all done second week of March. This year will be brutal. Even when it warms up the depth of the snow will make it tough.
-8° this morning.

Stuff that cold weather in a flat rate box and send it up, I will gladly pay the shipping. When I came out of the woods thursday evening, I was driving through a 1 1/2 feet of overflow. We are done till next fall unless we luck out and get some cold weather pretty quick. It is a month and a half to two months early for this weather. I am beginning to think Al knew what he was talking about.

Here's some pictures out the back window. There was a 10 pointer but as soon as he saw me in the window he was gone.

only a couple countys down from lake mich, keep getting that lake effect too, while its a normal cold winter like when I was a kid, the cold gets to me a lot more now, hands hurt to the point cant hardly pick up wood to put in the stove, and end up sitting close to the wood stove more, something about wood heat, it soothes the arthritis somehow,
but I think I will look into more insulation on the house though, since it seems algore and his global warming ran off, and left us all out in the cold,

Hi...

4F this morning...warmed up into the mid-20s. Also snowed 6"...made for an interesting drive home from work.

Made it with no trouble, unlike the myriad spun out cars and jack-knifed tractor trailers on I83 north and southbound between Maryland and Pennsylvania.

I took the Jeep to work today...good thing, my Nissan Altima is a nice fuel efficient comfortable ride but it hates snow and ice. It starts spinning out when they forecast flurries.

It has been so cold here in Tn. that the ice on the river packed up and moved south. Seems this cold spell has been bone chilling compared to the past.

Hi...

Got up this morning with no electric power...somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" of ice on top of 6" of snow.

Ran the snowblower, shoveled away the snow and cleaned off the vehicles.
Went to McDs for breakfast. Still no power at 1:00PM.

Went to the movies and ate a burger at a fast food joint.

Power was back on when we got home around 5:30PM. Temperature got up to the mid-40s today, good bit of melting.

Hot shower was a much needed luxury...hot Earl Grey tea a close second. Nice to have internet service as well.

I'm guessing now is when the "&Central Florida" is in effect because nobody is riding anything here in Mass.

I thought about it some and decided that life is too short to spend half of what's left waiting for better weather. So tomorrow it's fishing in the morning and a bike ride later in the day.

Been a warmer than normal winter here on my little wind-swept spot on the prairie. Ice storm blew in this evening and had to thaw the back door lock to get it. I think the roads will be iced over at least in spots tomorrow. Should be an interesting commute to work.

Its so cold here my house has lost 4' in width.

The North wall is trying to snuggle up to the South one because the South one gets the sun and is so much warmer.[smilie=s:

Cold?? News last night, Here in Maine we just set the record for the coldest month recorded in history a whopping 6.5 degrees average. The three months that came close were all in January we just did it in February. Weather man said the numbers aren't final but is sure with the given forecast that we will positively break the 8.9 degrees of the previous record.
Now that's a hard way to make a living or even get motivated!!!

It was -11 this morning. with some 4 feet of snow on the ground, spring looks a long way off. The block heater in the diesel Benz stopped working due to a short in the cord. Maybe that's why it has been hard to start?
Spring IS coming. The pitchers and catchers for the Red Sox have reported for spring training. THAT is the true sign of spring!

Unseasonably warm this winter, it seems we've had more rain than snow and what little snow we've had has been melting away this past week. Temp was 31 this morning with some light snow.

Six more inches earlier today although the sun is out now. 40+ car pile-up 20 miles from my work on the interstate this morning. Long winter that's for sure. This link should get you to the story.
