View Full Version : Anyone tried the Lee C308-170-F mold's boolits in their 300 AAC Blackout AR rifle?

I have about a few boolits cast from the Lee C308-170-F laying around. I made up 3 dummy rounds and they all feed and chambered perfectly. Has anyone tried this or the similar 311141 boolits in their 300 Blackout AR rifles? The flat nose should be better for a hunting boolit. I want to power coat all my cast boolits, so maybe that will be the problem.

No, but I've run that design in a 7.62 x 39 (sks) with no problems and that case has a capacity similar to the 300 blk. If it doesn't hang up on the feed ramp and the nose is not too fat, your next problem would be determining which powder and how much and then you are shooting. The nose diameter may be an issue with the PC so maybe test that first with a dummy load. I'd size to .309 or .310 and check neck clearance.

I tried some 311041s which is similar to the Lee bullet. It was kind of temperamental in my son's Daniel Defense. Tried several different brands of magazines. It wanted to hang up on the flat nose, and would damage almost all that managed to get chambered. If I single loaded them, they had pretty fair accuracy. Need a bullet with a nose somewhere between the 311041 and the Lee 311-155 SKS bullet.

Being the aventurous type I modified the M4 feed ramps to allow a larger meplat boolit to be used. The 311041 and RD311-165 feed without any nose damage and deliver a good punch on wild hogs. Looking into modifying one of my AR-15 300blk barrels to 300HRT and will also modify the feed ramps to allow for use of these boolits. I don't PC but have read that some have had problems with the boolit nose being too big for going into battery.

What powders and load did you use?

I have used both the Lee 170F and the 150F in my Hardened Arms Blk. I powder coat everything I cast and I don't gas check. I have used IMR 4227 (because it is readily available) with both boolits and have not really had any issues feeding. My velocities are somewhere around 1460(15.5gr) with the 170 and 1670(16.6) with the 150. Accuracy has not been as consistent as I would like - best groups are about 1 1/4 inch at 50 yds, but average around 2". Seating depth is about 1.89" as I recall. There is some feed ramp scraping on the nose, but I don't think it affects accuracy because I get about the same results hand feeding one at a time.

I've had a little bit more consistent results with the Accurate 31-150B plain base, also using 4227 at about 1600-1700 fps. They feed perfectly and show no nose damage at all. All of these boolits also work well using Green Dot and hand cycling as subs out to 50-60 yds. Very quiet.

jbremount,
I was using AA#9. Started at 12 grains and worked up to 13.5. Was going to try some AA1680 and H110, but didn't think I would be able to get around the feeding problem so just moved on to different bullets.

I used this boolit when my son and I first put our 300 uppers together. They shot well but didn't feed well, not because of the blunt nose but because of the short COL, nose dive issues in the magazines.
