Looking to shoot my jap 7.7. I was told the heavier bullets, ie 200 to 220 were better than lighter. I was trying 125 gr,174, and 180. I would like to find a good mold and use the jap to learn how to make my own. I was also thinking about using gas checks on them. On another thread I was told I need to have my 7.7 bore sized out to make sure I got the correct length and dia. I am guessing I need to have a gun smith do this? I am resizing 3006 brass to jap 7.7 as 3006 brass is much cheaper and easier to get.

To make a pound slug of your chamber for proper dimensions, see this sticky...

No gunsmith required!

If you slug the bore of your Arisaka, you may find that it is a bit loose in the middle. Mine measured .312 so I loaded some 311299 with gas check sized at .313 and weighing 212 grains in Norma brass with 12 grains of Unique. Modest accuracy, not much recoil.

After you figure out what bore and groove dimensions you have, NOE makes many oversized molds. You're starting out with a rifle that it isn't easy to get shooting though. The rounded rifling requires harder alloys for higher velocity. Not such a big deal if you're just looking for low recoil fun loads though.

How do you slug the bire?

That you can find that out in the sticky's.

However I would forget about the barrel and look at goodsteel's sticky on doing the pound slug.
Then I would go to the accurate molds website and look at the 215gr loverign design he Hans there and order it in the appropriate diameter.
If I had to guess (from measuring mine) that would be in the .314-.315 area so a .316 mold would work in that case.
But you really won't know unless you measure.

Ya yodogsandman sent me some slugs to pound. They came out at .314 . I ordered a .314 mold on the group buy.
