I thought some of you may find this curious object of interest... but wondered if anyone recognised what it is before I posted more. It's just over half an inch in diameter and 2.3 inch long. Any guesses, or does anyone know?

It sure looks like a whistle to me. And the wiki for dixon and sons indicates they were famous whistle makers :)

.

If it isn't a whistle (my guess), then it might be a spout for a powder horn/flask - something that Dixon also made.

Dixon & Sons is an old, well known loading tool, accessory and flask company for old originals. Can't really tell from the pic and the entire tool may not be shown but it looks like a special purpose charger ?? or pinfire capper-decapper. At least that's what I'ver heard them called by some "bits and bobs" collectors. Have never used a tool like that so it's a pure guess :)

Here's another picture, this time of a second design type and by a different maker. It serves the same purpose as that first pictured.

According to the above sites pictures, both of your pictures are cartridge testers.

+1 on the shot measure/spout for a shot snake.

We have a winner! (Sorry, no prize..)

Slim has corretly identified them as cartridge testers (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?269286-Enfield-Cartridge-Testers).

I've put more information in the linked thread as the title may catch a few more people who did not read this one.
