View Full Version : New sub-forum proposal

geargnasher

I've been visiting here for some time, and over the years have noticed that a lot of people who visit this site enjoy casting, handloading, and shooting lead bullets, so I'd like to propose a new section where those things can be discussed and not get lost amongst the other subjects. I was thinking something like "boolit casting", maybe it could be put as a sub-section of "cast boolits", and all relevant topics in progress could be moved there. I know the topics of polls, gardening, pets, trolls, the president, and ebay seem to be the most popular across the board, but the boolit cranks need their own place to discuss their hobby, don't you think?

Well jeez Gear, perhaps its a regional kind of thing. I mean, you are a anti-socialist Texan right? Maybe you are good to go on a lean mix of guns and ammo. Myself, a socialist Californian, requires a rich mixture to fuel my interest. Pets, polls and trolls are (for me) what puts a personality and face on the bare bones of bullits! Jay

As a boy, my mother taught me that "mold" is what grows on old cheese and my father made clay masters of toy soldiers and taught me to make plaster "moulds" for casting duplicates from beeswax. I have a distinct memory of inquiring as to the use of the same term and the explanation to the difference was in the spelling. That stuck with me, and as my father had earned an MS in English (since upgraded to a doctorate), I tend to take his word on such things.

If you put all the boolit casting and loading posts in one place then no one would know the delight of finding one unexpectedly amongst all the other fascinating discussions.

I need to get back to the cute kitten channel on YouTube right now because you have caused me so much stress and anxiety with your heartless suggestion to ruin everyone's fun. Or maybe I'll just go read some reloading data, that always brings sunshine to my face.

I think I understand what the OP is getting at. I used the technical and historical side of this board for years before the unwise step of clicking on the number for unread posts, and seeing all of them, from everywhere on the site. It was quite a shock to see that some people whose opinion I had considered seriously for whole minutes on end, were a pork pie short of a picnic when it came to religion, politics and race.

Of course all countries have pretty much the same proportion of raving propeller-heads. The test of a society is what the others do about them. But the level of hate extended to those subjects seems largely confined to the USA. I don't know any Western European country where it extends as far up the social ladder, from the losers and the quieter sort of inarticulate.

I don't know, last time I checked despite our differences we got along with each other a lot better than some parts of the world. Have not heard of the Catholics and Protestants forming militias to kill each other for being apostates. Same fellow that will rant about liberal agendas on a forum may well stop in a full blizzard to help push a stuck car out with an Obama sticker on the back bumper. Another might drive by and laugh, hard to say based on forum posts, too individual.

What I have noticed changing is the extent that power brokers and politicians are willing to feed into these divisions and possibly less social groups, clubs, and fraternal orders with memberships that cross those boundaries that divide us. Those groups were often a chance for us to find out that there were good people and neighbors with strongly held opinions that were the opposite of ours. Good for the country to know that the other side is not all "evil" or "American hating".

To some extent this forum does that, lot of good helpful people who may hold different views on some issues but share and help each other in our common interest. Have received PM's from people offering help and support, none ever asked me my religious affiliation, political party affiliation, or some litmus test questions before offering that help. I have done the same. But when it comes to posting opinions we can be a bit feisty at times.

Tolerance of opinions different from one's own increases in direct proportion to emotional maturity and intelligence. Intolerance of different opinions and the attack of persons holding them, is practiced by people who are emotionally insecure, and feel the need to attack people who they perceive as threats to them and their opinions. It is all rather telling. Civil discourse require emotionally mature intelligence stable grown ups.

On the cultural side, American's do tend to be more contentious than most others. However being contentious is not the same as being hate filled. For some on this board, it is a hobby.

Is this a solution to a problem we don't have? I thought CastBoolits was primarily about............wait for it.......................Cast Boolits!!!

Maybe there isn't one specific area for just cast boolits, but the sub forums seem to be set up pretty well, with reloading sections, a lead section, powder..............oh wait, and the Cast Boolits sub forum.

I think the OP's suggestion must have flown right over my head, as I just really don't get what he is looking for. I am a member of Calguns forum which is based in California, but also happens to be a large group with a lot of info on various firearms topics. When people on Calguns ask about boolits and casting, I direct them to CastBoolits as the reloading section on Calguns is just a little tease as to what we discuss here. Calguns is more about general topics and is full of BSing back and forth. Calguns is a big community and feels more like the public than Cast Boolits where it feels more like a tight knit community. Calguns has a very popular Off Topic section where this forum is lucky to have 5% of the off topic chatter that Calguns does.

Maybe the OP should browse some other forums to put the topic into perspective, or maybe his opinion just differs.

I'm not on any "side", nor asking anyone else to be, I only posted a facetious poll to poke a little fun at all of us. It's good to see that there are at least three or four others left on this site who don't take themselves too seriously, but the rest, oh my. Things get very tense around here every single year in February, and if this thread didn't make light of that, I don't know what will.

Guilty as charged! Of course, it's the old Federal in the white boxes with black print that was sold by the case so I bought one when I bought a Garand (won't say how much HXP I bought!) and a Mossberg target 22 at the North Store if that gives you an idea of how long ago that was...

See this is why we need a sub forum for casting boolits. People asking after each others health, discussing rim fire ammo and all sorts of non bullet casting stuff. I too figured out how to have sarcasm font.

Good luck with the rehab, had my shoulder worked on last year, made a world of difference. No longer swore out loud if I jerked arm sneezing. Does take awhile to get that last 20% of recovery.
