More of a cat person than a dog person, but we have both and probably always will. Here's my buddy being held by my wife and one with me;

We also recently adopted another kitten, but he isn't old enough to leave Mama yet. He's the little black one climbing on the mama cat in this picture;

I grew up with both dogs and cats. As the cats grew older, especially the females, they got real aloof. Dogs never did, always wanted to be with you no matter what.
Nature has decided the issue for me though, as I became increasingly allergic to cats. If I touch my eye after a finger touched where a cat was, it puffs up, itches, turns red. The sclera will get like a raw egg white and I can't close my eyelid. Only cold water rinsing and ice will help. Blotchy raised welts on the skin too.

Dog.
A dog will give you a warning.
In the past I could be petting a cat and it would be purring one second and then hiss and swipe the next. No warning.
Not to even mention the little box.

Wilco, you're at it again ha?

We love most animals better than we like most people.

Grew up around horses, dogs and cats. We've had wolfdogs for nearly 20 years now. Definitely not the kind of pet everyone should have. You have to socialize them very well early on. You can never leave them alone. You have to maintain behavioral protocols that remind and reassure them of their place in the pack. Why do we have them? They are more loving and integrate more deeply into the family than any other dog I've ever had. Although they're not good watch dogs for keeping your property safe, if anyone messes with their pack (which is us) it would be like fighting with the business end of a chainsaw.

I had a cat that was a drop off, and she made me her human (after I protected her from another female cat that was trying to run her off) Mama Kitty, as she came to be called, would follow me everywhere when I was outside in the yard. She would even climb up on the roof of the house, and would come down when I did. Once I was rebuilding our porch and she stayed right close to me, even though I was cutting wood with a circular saw. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us. One day, we noticed that she and another outside cat had not been seen for about 3 days. Sometimes, they would do that but eventually come back. This time, neither cat came back.

My daughter has worked and worked volunteering her time as a photographer helping adopt out kittens at the animal shelters..No telling how may kittens she has helped find a home for by working so hard at it..She adopted out two to me..Once I saw my little grey kitten and how sad he looked I had to have him.. He is the best cat I ever had.
I saved his life for sure, and he helped save mine.. I was going through a very hard time ,and he gave me something to be interested in..something to love and care for.I love my cats..I have a thirteen year old cat that has been my friend for many years.. I miss my lab Misty but currently have 2 cats. Tigger I raised form a handful of fur and is now 2 feet long and 20 pounds. he is my lap kitty and often hangs out on the back of my office chair when I am online

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd248/maryalanab/IMG_20141023_1904252681_zps5adecd88.jpg

Oreo is a rescue, after I had him fixed he gained 10 pounds. Somewhere near 25 pounds now. This picture is from Thanksgiving, both got a big piece of turkey as I was breaking it down for the freezer. Oreo came in, flopped down like that in front of the TV and burped. He watches TV all the time.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd248/maryalanab/2013-04-19_17-46-17_595_zps60e5ceaf.jpg

Tigger also begs me to turn the water on so he can play in it. he is half Bengal half?(some bobcat is suspected) and they like playing in water. He will wander in the shower when I am in there and get soaked.

I'm more of a dog person, as you can probably tell from my Avatar.

You never hear of anyone who is handicapped using a helper cat. Cats have their place though. I've had a few barn cats, but they weren't really what I would call pets.

Cats also don't scare up birds for you to shoot, or retrieve birds when asked from the middle of a lake or pond or whatever body of freezing water. I've never really heard of a "gun-cat".

Cat's, at least as far as I have seen don't like to go swimming for fun in the pond, or swimming pool. While others may have managed to train a cat to do something for them, I've personally never had any success doing so.

Cat's don't get excited when they see a shotgun, and know its time to go bird hunting but a bird dogs sure does!

Cats don't bark when the horses get out to the other side of the fence, or help you herd them back to the pasture either.

Labradors however are very patient and tolerant dogs.

My white lab mostly just looks pretty prim and proper, but even as a pup, she still minded very well.

She is the most affectionate dog I have ever had and over the years, I've had quite a few. Her well earned nickname is "cuddles" for good reason.

Black Labs have always been my eager to please hunting and working dogs. My current Black Lab will happily get a soda out of the fridge for you when asked. I have a video of him doing just that, sadly I don't have a video hosting site.

My black will bring you his food or water dish when he is hungry or thirsty. He also brings you your shoes when asked, and can also put small stuff away (like socks) into the laundry hamper. Can pick up stuff that you've dropped, so you don't have to reach down and get it with a bad back.

He will close, and some cases can even open doors, including sliding glass doors which is a huge help when your hands are full, or if you just don't feel like getting up to let the dog back in.

If you don't mind a few wall scratches, he can also turn off handicapped light switch plates in a couple rooms. If I really was handicapped, a Black Lab would be near indispensable. As it is, without one around It feels like I've had a limb removed.

I'm sure there are quite a few more things they do which I take for granted every day. I sorely miss all the little things when one passes, and I have to train up another pup because sadly neither dogs nor cats live long enough.

A Labrador really is the only unconditional love money can buy.

Poll is skewed, there is no Prefer dogs, use cats for skeet.

As my Avatar would suggest, my (well, she might disagree who owns who) Brittany Spaniel is multipurpose and multi-talented. Just this year alone, she has worked Doves, Woodcock, Pheasants, Squirrel (by herself as well!), Turkey and... thankfully tapering down... Deer. If there were any Grouse left in either SE or SW WI, she'd be all over that....

At two years plus, she is still as fast as a jet. We know of Brittanies that have hunted Racoons. I am not sure of what they wouldn't hunt, but they are not built tough enough to be a strike dog. No coyotes, bobcat, wolves, bears, badgers...

Yep..using cats for skeet should have been there...I imagine the cats are the only ones smart enough to know the high house from the low house..not much to hunt where we live except lots of gang banger illegals and they all got pit bulls that eat all the other dogs.

I don't seem to have a picture of Purdy the springweiler that came before her . Purdy was so willing and such comic relief her 1st couple of seasons in the duck blind she was a pretty good mouser too. She hunted 2-3 days a week from 5 months until she was 10 from late August to the end of February and at least 6 days over the winter break. I lost her in 05' in the midst of the divorce from X1.
Kitty was lost and adopted me about 0300 11/1/07 under a full moon . I'm not superstitious especially but no sense taking chances.
Remmy is a hard sell she is willing but stubborn and she has to do things her way. She's rotten pointer ,English or German is unknown and about 50 lbs at the tender age of 7 months .

Hi...

Dogs...end of discussion.

Never had a bad one...some were a little "different", but never a bad dog.

I think you get out of a dog what you put into them. Mine have always been even-tempered. obedient and affectionate and tolerant of our presence in their doghouse.

Of course, every one has been spoiled rotten by my wife.

Cats are like dogs in that some are smart while others don't have walking around smarts, and then also like dogs there are some cats that are just super smart. Cats of course have a different attitude and take a bit of understanding but once I got to know the little critters I was amazed at just how much I had been underestimating them. I think the most intelligent of all the cat breeds is the Abyssinian, these little buggers can be simply awesome with what they can be taught to do, well for a cat anyway. It's not that cats aren't smart enough it's just that it's difficult to get them to do anything unless they see some benefit for themselves by doing it! Our Abyssinian was almost grown when I rescued her from a coal mine (of all places!) and she quickly showed us her learning abilities, within just a few days she knew the kitchen and dinning room were off-limits and which pieces of furniture she was allowed on. She will come only to the door of those two rooms and will only sleep on the two older recliners she is allowed on, honestly she does things that I would never have believed a cat could be taught to do, a smart dog can be mind boggling at what it can be taught but a cat? The point is if someone is looking for an indoor cat for a pet those Abbys are a great choice and probably make the best house pet of any cat breed.

I have a cat that climbs up on the printer every night and prints a page. He has learned how to use that to wake us up for attention. Cats are very personable. Like dogs you can get a great one, or something else..If you ever get a great one then you are hooked for life..
I love my Labrador retrievers. It may be time for me to bond with another one this spring..
I love the black female labs .They have always been very faithful, loyal dogs.Smart beyond reason.
My wife is a Vet so I am stuck with a lot of animals..

I love them all.

Dogs for us. How many cats would allow this? This is my son sitting in his sisters chair with a Boston terrier for a cushion. We have 2 bostons, they are the best with the kids, they will let the kids do whatever they want to. If I was a dog I would have bitten one of them after some of the things they have done to those poor dogs.

Wife picked up the little guy last night, I'm not gonna be home til the weekend, can't wait to see him. Kind of funny, our old Shi Tzu, who is absolutely indifferent to our other cat, apparently followed the kitten around and was very attentive and protective of him. He doesn't see or hear real well nowadays and sleeps most of the time, maybe having a little playmate around will help him out.

I would say by that coment that your experience of actual living with a cat is little to none.

For example, my current cat which is far from the coolest cat that I have ever owned, just wants to be where I am. Whenever she is awake she quietly follows me room to room and plants next to me when I settle. Just like my Collie does. But she stays away from the dog.

I'd say that's pretty social. My past cats throughout life were even more social.

Here's the king of the seven, at least most of the time, Romeo, the big yellow one. In any given episode of 'let's charge madly through the house', Romeo is as likely to be the pursuer as the prey. Curled up with him is my pet Peeve.

130792

That's two of the seven.

As much time as I spend on the road, a dog simply would not work. The cats entertain themselves, then line up at the door with disapproving looks when I return.

Just the other way around, most cats will bond to their owners and unless they grow up together most cats don't get along very well with other cats. I have one long hair female calico that was abandoned with a broken hip and left to starve. She crawled into our yard one evening as I was feeding our other cats, I guess she heard me calling them and knew what it meant. She was literally a skeleton with skin stretched over it and a broken hip to boot, I got my pistol and was going to put her put of her misery but when I came back it was too late since my wife was crying at the sight of this very sick cat and I couldn't convince her that putting it down was the best thing to do. Fast forward 1 1/2 years and several stiff vet bills later, she is a big healthy and overweight ball of fur that follows me everywhere I go and I mean every step I take she is right there! This cat is as dedicated to my wife and me as any dog could ever be and we wouldn't take anything for her, she still walks kind of odd with what turned out to be two broken hips but she hops like a rabbit and is darn near as fast as one when she wants to be.

Who to trust and who not to.

I can't even tell you how many times I've walk up and pet or picked up someone's cat for the first time and they were in shock and said "no one has ever been able to do that but me, or the famiy!"

My cat Tigger knows when I hurt and where and he will curl up against that spot and purr. Right now he is draped across the back of my neck with his head on my left collar bone. That entire side has been a mass of pain since the car accident and the last 2 days have been especially bad. The heat feels good and the purr is soothing to the muscles. He watches me type and occasionally watches the cursor on the screen.

Dogs tell no lie nor disparage their human companions.
Recent archaeologic digs in the Czech Republic have determined that Canis Familiaris have kept company with Homo Sapiens for at least 35,500 years. The canine specimens there were of a big honkin' size. Humans feasted on mammoth, dogs ate reindeer. There is theory the dogs participated in the hunt and kept other canines (wolves?) and bears at a distance during the butchering. A familiar scene, eh?

Diesel looks a lot like the tortie we had. My daughter named her Cassidy. She definitely had a "Tortitude" but she was pretty special. Was born in our back yard, from a feral mother.
