This is a very fun boolit to play around with. I just picked up a Lyman re-run. But this looks like a better design.

Could someone 'splain the thinking (and maybe the history) behind this collar button design? 45 is my favorite caliber and I guess I've never quite understood it.

ambergrifleman,

A little history....

The original 45-70 "Gallery" cartridge was loaded with a round ball and only 5 grs. of black powder loaded loosely in the case. Velocity ran in the 500 f.p.s range. I have made replications of that load and with the powder positioned back against the primer, 50 yard groups ran 2" in a friends original Trapdoor Springfield.

THe original 45-70 "Armory" cartridge contained 20 grs of b.p. under a 240 - 250 gr bullet. The powder was also loaded loosely in the case. Velocity ran in the 800 f.p.s. range. Replication loads using a "bumped up" (.459" dia) 250 gr. 45 colt bullet grouped into 1 1/2" @ 50 yards.

Here's a pic of the various factory cartridges inluding a shot cartridge
The "Gallery" cartridge is on the left.
