just for a light weight plinker a 300 grain is what I use . For a hunting bullet it's hard to beat a 405 grain. I have an NEI pointed bullet and a 405 Lyman FN that get used a lot.

Lyman 457123 - 385 gr (#2 alloy) plain-base RN or Lee 457-340-F - 340 gr. RNFP (also plain-base). I started out with the Lee in my reproduction Trapdoor but moved up to the heavier Lyman to replicate the old BP "carbine" load. The RCBS 45-405-FN is a GC boolit but shoots very well for me at around 1250 fps.

RCBS 405 GC works very well in several of mine. I never got a single
good group out of my Lee 405, tho.

A shooting partner gets good accuracy from the Lee 405 from a Numrich barrel on a Martini. Ir is .45-70. Alloy is in the 1-20 to 1-30 range. Accuracy may not be absolutely top-notch but groups are good to 400 yards. Bullets weigh around 420 gr from the softer alloys. There have been no leading problems with the softer alloys. His powder of choice is 5744 (26 - 28 gr.).

Mine really likes the Lee 457-500-R. I am shooting Black Powder and soft lube, but accuarcy is great as long as the "Nut" behind the trigger does it's part.

I like the Saeco 425gr spire point mold(20:1 lead & tin) with 24 - 25gr of Alliant 2400 powder and standard large rifle primers. It's given me frequent sub - moa 5 shot groups at 100yds with my 45 - 70 rolling block and aperature sights.

I've never met a rifle that didn't like a RANCH DOG boolit!

457124 or 457125 - 385gr and 500gr classics
Both are old-time .45-70 bullet designs originally meant for the trapdoor rifles and carbines and have worked well in many other different single shots of that same caliber.

I have the Uberti hi wall in 45/70 and shoot the Lyman 535gn postel over 28 gn 5744.
5 shot 4 inch groups at 200 yards are achieved off a bag. I have added the Marbles midrange tang sight but am still using the standard front.
Also use 5gn bluedot under 55gn swiss 1.5 fg. Nice bang and very accurate.

Once the weather warms up I plan to start this Saeco 350 gr. FPGC. Shown with a California compliant gluelet. I do plan to use this on Whitetails, course gotta round up some dies too. This one appears to be one of the lightest of the bunch.

I traded in a Saeco 018 for an LBT 458-400-M for my Marlin 1895CB. It is an excellent performer in the lever action. Casts about 398gr with Lyman #2. LBT makes a very nice mould.

Depends on what you want to use the light loads for. For long-range low vel. .45-70 loads I like my Saeco 1881 type 500 gr. with 23 1/2 gr. 5744 for 1180 FPS. It will stabilize better for long-range than lighter bullets and be less affected by wind. For a lighter bullet, such as for hunting, I like my Saeco 350 gr. RNFPGC at 1420 FPS using 28 gr. of 5744.

Has anyone cast the 500gr 459 3r lee mold? also do these guns like flat noses or more of a spizter type?
For the single shots sometimes it seems the standard mold choices are a little limited. One way around it would be to special order a custom mold. Study the classics that work well and fine tune the custom bullet. For my single shots of all variety- old and new I've had really good success for the mid pressure level loads using the popular smokeless powders like Rel 7 or similar.
The bullets I like for the above stated application are Lyman 457102 (a 420-425 gr GC) and RCBS 45-405-FN (a 405 gr GC). Both are "classic" designs and other companies probably make similar molds. Even for mid level pressure I like the gas check and a BHN somewhere around 15-20.
If I had the time and inclination I'd order a custom mold using a similar bullet shank to one of the above but instead of the flat point I'd like to have a fairly short 1-1.5 caliber R roundnose. I don't like the long pointy Postells nor the huge bore riders and while the big meplat flatpoints work great in the lever guns.... seem a waste of some ballistic coefficient in the single shots.
I've spent a lot of my extra horsepower with the swaging set up and paper patching instead of the custom mold and casting in the big 45s. The pic below shows a nose design that works very well in the single shots. It's about a 1.5 cal R swaged paper patched for either the 45-70 or the 45-110 BPCRs.
Mine really likes the Lee 457-500-R. I am shooting Black Powder and soft lube, but accuarcy is great as long as the "Nut" behind the trigger does it's part.

This boolit so far has performed well in my Lone Star rifle with 18" twist. I have shot it over BP to 400 yds. A Saeco 645 lookalike from a Dave Mos mould performs quite well from the same rifle. A boolit I need to wring out this coming season is a 350 gr flatnose cast in a Lyman 457122 HP mould with a flatnose punch in lieu of the HP punch.
