The college indoor range where I shoot had a small box of 22LR brass from their rifle team's practice.

Bout a 3rd of a bucket or so, maybe 7500-8000 pieces. I gotta get some 22cal jacket making dies then bullet making dies.

Only a 3rd of a bucket? We got about 3 trash cans about 1/2 full at our ROTC range. Can we put a group buy together for a full set of dies maybe ????? I'm wanting to do this though I'm looking at making my own dies to start with :Fire:

There's another 5gal bucket of 22LR brass but I had a backpack full of guns plus my AR15 and couldn't carry it all. Sunday I'm getting the rest of it.

Make sure you anneal those fired cases before trying to form jackets. It saves a lot of work and frustration.

What's the trick? Put them on a hotplate til they discolor evenly then let them cool?

wash them perhaps as well, Oven at high for 30minutes.....when the wife is away? lol

I picked up a 5-gallon bucket plumb FULL (as in nearly overflowing) of .22 brass from a high school rifle team last time I was visiting up in PA. Yes, they still have high school rifle teams there! Really kind of refreshing.

Anyhow, now all I need is a set of swaging dies.. So, I'd be very interested if we could get a group buy together for dies.

I'm going to get a RCE jacket making die for $60.

I anneal in fairly small amounts, so I use my old Lyman casting pot. I fill it up, put a metal cover on top, and put the pot on a 750 watt hotplate. Bring it up to about 400 degrees and then turn it off and let cool. If you get them too hot, a coating of scale will appear. You need just enough heat to cause them to discolor.

Cool. Thanks. I'm going to be selling ammo soon and will try my hand at making bullets too. Might look into frangible ammo.

Just make damned sure you sort out any unfired dud's or dropped loaded stuff.
Might make a bang. IF you'd happen to have your face near when it goes off you'd be in trouble.

Fill a couple cookie sheets and stick in the oven. I've tempered some parts that way.
I'm single, so it don't matter what I cook up now.

Sent a guy in Pa, or there abouts a flat rate box full of lr's last spring. Said he'd send me samples when he got started at it. Had the dies and press already. Haven't heard a word since saying they arrived ok. Now I haven't been able to find that many. Never fails huh?
Sure don't want to buy them from the scrap yard at $3/lb very bad. But, I could IF----!
