I have been having great success with 3031 in my 300 Savage, model 99.
I have been loading pulled surplus bullets.

Anyone else using 3031? What calibers are you loading and are you having success?
If you hate 3031 can you tell me why?

I use it in most of my .30 cals, 30-30, 30-06, 308, 7.62x54R. Also in 7x30 Waters. I like it a lot.

Great powder and like 4895 works great in many calibers, 30-30, etc and great in the 45-70 too.
It was my powder of choice when I had a .222 also.

It is my accuracy powder in 22-250. 31 gr. behind 55gr. Gold match is a tackdriver for me.

36gr under an NOE 460-405 in 45/70 is a beautiful thing.

For the 30'06 I'm using a normal hunting load of 48.0gr with a 150gr PSP and then a real fast booger with 53.0gr behind a 150gr FMJ scooting out there at 3120fps.
The 45/70 now gets 56.0gr with the 300gr JHP. I did have it up to 60.0gr but that load ended up being pointless.

I expect to start experimenting with real boolits for the 45/70 soon as I get the pistol boolits going.

I just started using it in my 35 Whelen, and am going to try it in my 8 x 57 Mausers.
So far the whelen with Heavy C B's likes it
I used it years ago in my 30/30 and was very pleased

Pretty much accepted as "the" 308 Winchester accuracy load in the 60's and 70's. The AMTU at Fort Benning used it as their standard 300 meter load with a 168 sierra for a long time. Still good today.

Welcome to the site! Thank you for an enlightening first post, I didn't know that. I'll have to try it in the 308.:drinks:

I have used 3031 with success in virtually every cartridge I shoot that uses a Large Rifle primer, including but not limited to: 220 Swift, 243 Winchester, 257 Roberts, 6.5mm Carcano, 7mm Mauser, 30 Remington, 30-30, 308 Winchester, 30-40 Krag, 30-06, 7.65mm Mauser, 303 British, 8mm Mauser, 35 Remington, 375 Winchester, 11mm Mauser, and 45-70. It is an extremely versatile powder, and one of my favorites for 35 years.

Use it for my 45-70 loads and love it so far. Pretty clean burning and fills the case very nicely with my 405 Gr. Lee cast boolits. So far besides using Reloader 7, when i can find it, this is one of my favorites for this caliber.

.30-06 and .223

I never tried it in the .223. Is that a compressed load?

3031 in the 308 with cast bullets from 190 to 220 grs. work for me in all 4 of my 308's.
Remington, Howa, Savage, Ruger.

Tried it in my 223 and 270 back in the 1970's. Had to weigh every charge to make the long stick powder work. Maybe I just needed a better powder measure but I'm lazy. So I migrated to easy measure powder. It's however obviously been a very successful powder.

IMR has a whole new line of powders out. Placing in limbo the future of some of our old standbys.

3031 has been a good powder in most of my rifle calibers over the years to one degree or another for jacketed bullets, which by the way, i no longer shoot. As far as cast go it has worked well with 200gr. boolits in 35 whelen at both moderate and faster speeds.

I use a lot of it in 30-06, but in several other caliber as well such as the 30/30,38/55, 348,405 and the 45/70. Meters well and burns clean. Usually easy to find around. LLS

I use it in .223 and .308 pretty much works in all rifle calibers I load, actually that's why I tried it , I saw it was a common powder to several calibers in a manual I was browsing. I have tried other powders for .308 but I stay with Hodgdon products, if it aint broke...

Originally created for the . . . . . . . can you guess??

303 Brit cartridge --- 303-1, designation.

So, should be fine in any of the early 1900s or late 1890s bottlenecked military cartridges and similar
civilian rounds.

I use IMR 3031 with .223, 30-30, 30-40 Krag, 7.63x39, 308 Win, and 30'06.

About the only 30 caliber that I don't use IMR 3031 with is the 300 Winchester Magnum. I use 4831 more than anything else in the 300 Win Mag.

I'm pretty sure I could come up with a 300 Win Mag load that worked well using IMR 3031 and lighter bullets (100-130 grains) if I ever took the time to try.

IMR 3031 has long been one of my go to powders.

I use it for my 45-70 with 350 Hornady Fps….ba!!s accurate at just under full tilt. I recently picked up some R7 after reading good reviews on it here and at Marlin owners for the 45-70.

I like it in my 32 win spec.

Only complaint is the long extruded sticks

Yeah, need to weigh, even my Redding measure has a problem with it, like 4759. I fear our best powders will end too. I bought 16# of 4759 so I have over 20# now. So old it will be in my will! :holysheep The only newer powder I like is Varget but can't find any. Kind of broke anyway.

IMR 3031 is my go-to powder with cast in .30 cal cartridges (.308, 30-06, 7.62x54R, 7.5 Swiss). Good accuracy at hunting velocities with 150-200 gn boolits.

I use it for my Thompson 223 barrel. I trickle every one because of the length but am very happy with the grouping.

I use it for 308, and 30-06, and after seeing all the posts on this thread, I now know why the last time I was at the reload supply shop they didn't have any, lol.

25 gr of 3031 behind a 173 gr boolit for 30-30. A favorite load!

I've used it in load development for several cartridges and I'm currently trying it in the 300 Savage. Some other powder always seems to work a little better for my favorite loads but it always works pretty well in almost every cartridge I've tried it in, probably one of the most versatile powders on my shelf.
