I bought a bunch of casting stuff from a friend this eveningto add to my casting equipment got a small Lee electric pot, needs a serious cleaning, an RCBS Lubesizer and a couple of sizer dies, 25 lbs or so of lead and two Lyman moulds, 452484 which is a discontinued gascheck mould for .45 acp and the real problem child, a Lyman 429244 which is a 255 gr gas check semi wadcutter. My dilema is that I do not own anything in .44 caliber, my problem is what model pistol to go with this mould. Maybe a big Ruger single action or maybe a S&W N frame. Maybe a Charter arms bulldog in .44 special, decisions, decisions.:-D

That 429244 is a great boolit in .44 magnum and .444 Marlin, one of the most accurate I've used. You don't need a gas checked boolit in .44 specials.

Your lucky day, I have a Sand W Lew Horton 3 inch round butt stainless steel revolver for sale.

I love it! You buy a mould and instead of selling it because you have no gun for it, you use it for an excuse to buy a gun! I love gun nuts!

I have a Ruger SB, a Ruger RH and a Charter arms bulldog. None of them use a gas check for my reloads. If you were shooting a 444 you might need it.

I realize you don't "need" a gas check on .44 specials and such but the mold came wth 3 boxes of gas checks, 2 of 'em unopened so whats a guy to do?:Fire:

I had Buckshot HP a 429244 for me and with the HP I can shoot a soft alloy faster. That is the main use of GC in my 44's. gianni

I had a friend "scalp" a 429244 and hollow point it at the same time. It now casts a 225g hp boolit that is plain based and is my favorite boolit for my lite weight 329PD and 629-4 Mtn Guns. In my estimation, gas checks are really not necessary for the .44 as long as the boolits are sized properly and not driven too fast. 1100 to 1200 fps is good enuf for my needs!

If the boolit design is well balanced (great accuracy) using a GC, then when scalping the GC shank off would just about REQUIRE taking the same weight off of the front for the same accuracy. That can be done by hollowpointing like what Shuz did, and if not enough weight is taken out, then shaving the nose some would benefit. ... felix

I'd get a Ruger Super Black Hawk (or possibly a 50th Anniversary 44 Flat Top if I found a price I liked!) Blue works; I like stainless better. Barrel length of your choice...I suggest a 5.5 to carry or a 7.5 to shoot. The longer barrel guns (7.5 and 10.5) have the DRAGOON grip frame; the shorter ones have the standard XR3-RED from the Black Hawk. This gun is readily available new or used, often discounted and d--- near indestructible! A used one usually needs vigorous cleaning and de-leading...and maybe new grips and a trigger job.

The big Smith & Wessons are nice. Similar recommendations on finish, barrel length, etc. They aren't quite as durable as the Ruger, but anyone who feeds anything a steady diet of maximum loads needs a bigger gun...and counselling. I was 30 feet away from a Cowboy Action Shooter who blew up his Colt Clone at a shoot. IT COULD HAVE BEEN REALLY UGLY, but luckily no one was hurt..other than needing fresh linen!

429244 is a classic. Use any number of loads and enjoy. I'm using IMR 4227 with it and the RANCH DOG boolit in my 44 MARLIN Cowboy rifles. 3000 boolits/gas checks is a fair amount for most people to use up.

You scored a good one. I like how mine casts. I'm a 41 fan myself but have one to cast for a buddy's SBH. Keep it, buy your "needed" gun and enjoy.

Back in in 1963, I bought a 429244 mold to cast bullets for an old Belgian made, single shot pistol chambered for .44 Russian. Worked very well. These bullets also work well for modest loads in the .44 Magnum and Special.

The hollow point version of that boolit is a real classic. I have one of those moulds, and it shoots well in my Super Blackhawk and 1894 Marlin. The checks may not be necessary, but they don't hurt either when you're shooting max loads with soft alloy. And they clean out the gray stuff left by some of my plain based loads.
