Looking into a new mold for an old Marlin in 35 Remington. I have yet to load for it, and it has been years since it was last out for a spin. I understand that the RCBS 200 grain mold is the mold to have, but I coat my boolits and am wondering if the gas check is necessary? Only want to shell out the coin for one mold at this time to get this old levergun back out the range.

Thanks for any input.

I only have one mold for my 35 Rem. and that is it.
I shoot it in a old marlin with the micro groove barrel.
It has a GC on it, and it works great.
What I did find was I coat them with JPW and I get no leading.:Fire:

You don't have to put a GC on it if you don't want to. That being said, you are going to want to put a GC on it if pushed hard. Coating is not a substitute for one.

With NOE, you're often not forced to choose between the two. I have several of Al's moulds with both PB and GC cavities mixed.

Fireman - I pushed a PCd 168 sans GC in 308 over 17 gr. of 2400, decent accuracy & fps. Not familiar with that mould but it will depend on the length of the rear drive band ( I like the edge of the band cut @ 45 deg.). I'd go for the GC part and test without. Spray the base & bands heavy coating, then size.

Get the GC'd one. You can leave the GC off for low velocity (<1400) and put one on for higher velocity.

I have that mold for my 35 Rem but was under the impression you were not supposed to shoot it without a GC. Always thought the reduced diameter of the base where the GC goes would cause issues. So if you keep it at low velocity it shoots as good as a PB? I had bought a Lee C358-158-SWC to plink with but would rather shoot the RCBS 35-200 if I do not have to put a GC on it.

That's an old wives tale. You can shoot a GC design w/out a gas check.

You're gonna have to shoot some of both, then tell us how it goes.

Every rifle and barrel is different.

I find the RD 359-190 pretty hard to beat. Not sure if NOE is currently making that one but it's a good hunting boolit.

I tried using a 358477 plain base pistol boolit but, it wouldn't cycle from the magazine through the action. Made it into a 2 shot rifle, one in the chamber and one in the tube.
