I'm thinking of loading a Lee 358/158 button nose WC sprue end up in 357 cases. I like the idea of the full sharp meplat at self defense distance. Would i encounter any issues with the jump from the throat to the forcing cone and on to the barrel? I'm using strait WW's.I like to keep-em in the 8-900 fps range. Is this a dumb idea or is it a good thumper for under 20 yards? Just curious. I've read old posts here but I am still intrigued. Any opinions?

As long as the boolit slips through the cylinder throat you will be fine.

I think he means the Lee 148 WC. I use that in TL. A WC will cut a nice round hole for sure, that's what they do. Should do some damage.

I doubt you would see a measurable difference in wound trail, though you would in accuracy. IMO, there is too little difference in nose height to have tissue displacement. At the low velocities, the nose spray forward would not exceed the shoulder spray. Sorry, but I can't draw it up on a notebook.

well in reality there is almost no expansion
only .1" and the bullet lost 112gr of mass
when you shoot Superman it just splorches out and its gone

If you shoot Superman he will proudly puff out his chest and take it, but when you run out of ammo and throw the revolver at him he will prudently duck!

I'd keep the sharp, flat sprue end against the powder charge for accuracy. It's not like that little button nose is going to do any "streamlining" on it's way through tissue. Whatever it hits won't know the difference.

One of my "house guns" uses a 150 DEWC over a stiff load of W231. I've shot it into newspaper (dry) and at 10' it doesn't expand much (which is fine with me). I figger a full meplat .38 at about 900 fps will do appreciable tissue damage with little over penetration, and safe for my neighbors. Way back when, I tried the old "reversed HBWC" and it failed (very poor accuracy, inconsistent expansion, often no expansion, jus collapsing of the skirt). I've shot the DEWC load from my 2" 38 and my 357 Mag. (both at 38 velocities and light 357 loads), and both are pretty accurate out to 20 yards...
