I am looking into the lee real bullet/ roundball molds, to mainly save myself some money, two thing I want to cast anyway.

are they worth it?

or

just get the two molds?

I have an knight usak and a t/c new englander both 50cal.

I cast RB's with Lee moulds for a Ruger OA I used to own, and I currently use one to cast .600" RB's for my Snider. They work great, and don't wear out out using them. Very accurately made cavity.

The Lee REALs work good with the right twist. It is really up to you and the amount you will shoot in RB vs. REALs.

I have an knight usak and a t/c new englander both 50cal.

Depends on the twist rate in those rifles.

I shoot the 45-200 REAL and a LEE 45 patched round ball in a slow twist rifle. Both work great. I have them in separate molds.

The 50 caliber combo mold is a ball and the heavier 50-320 REAL. I tend to think of those as projectiles for two different twist rates. The LEE 50 Combo mold would make more sense to me if they offered it as a roundball and the lighter 50-250 REAL

If you have a medium to slow twist barrel (1 in 48, 1 in 60, 1 in 66) I think you will find the patched ball or the 50-250 REAL to shoot best. The longer 50-320 REAL is likely to work better in the medium to fast twist barrels (1 in 48, 1 in 32, 1 in 28)

the new englander with the 1 in 48 is the one i am going to shot patch ball with.

my knight usak with the 1 in 28 and the new englander with conicals.

it that combo mold makes since to me but they should make a mold for the 250 real and round ball

that helps me out, having 2 guns with the twist rate from medium to fast I don't know if I will got the combo mold or not still.

I have a CVA .50 with a 1-48 twist and it shoots both RB and REAL very good. 1-48 in a 50 cal is a good medium for shooting both RB and conacles.

Can't go wrong with the Lee combo.

I do see where it would come in handy. have both I am looking at, only have to buy one mold. I see the savings. I am going to take my time and think it over. :coffee:

Hi mooman,

A guy at work's son just had a CVA .50 cal. in 1-48" given to him and I cast him up a batch of Lee R.E.A.L.'s in 250 grain persuasion.

I haven't shot my M/L guns in awhile but have some T/C maxi-ball lube to give him if that will work.

I also wondered what kind of powder charge he should use?

I used as low as 60 grains and up to 80 grains of 3F or Pyrodex "P" back then in the 80's. I don't know much about the newer B/P substitutes or lubes out there to tell him about.

So, does this sound about right? I think that T/C lube is kind of runny. Maybe a wad of some sort under the REAL to protect the powder?

Anyhow, would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks...Newtire

I have not whole lot with with conicals yet. I have shot the 385gr t/c maxi hunter out of a knight usak with 85 grs pyrodex p at 50 yrds . little hard on me. next time I shot them I am going to drop it to 80grs. if that helps. with triple 7 2f should be close pyrodex p.
