G,day All,

Just thought the the accompanying link might be useful for anyone wanting cast bullet loads with Trail Boss. The data is from Thales, the Aussie manufacturer of Trail Boss.

Notice how the same bullet and same powder charge develops more pressure and velocity from the .357 than for the .38 Special!

Something doesn't add up. Is this the same Trail Boss we buy here? Following the directions on the bottle I arrived at a 9 grain starting load and 12 grain maximum load for my .38-55 with a 250 grain boolit. The directions state the max load is a non compacted case full just to the base of the boolit and the starting load is 70% of that. The chart in the link gives a starting load of 6 grains and max of 7 grains for .38-55 with 250 grain boolit. Big difference.

I have noticed the load data published here in the USA to be the same way, well under the charges one derives using the "70% of available case up to almost compressed" rule of thumb. I think the anemic published charges are for mouse phart cowboy rounds. I wonder if the 38/357 thing can be verified or if they got it bass ackward.

Can anyone post the source for the "70% of available case up to almost compressed" rule and maybe the rest of the rule. Would not a almost compressed load in a 45-70 under a 405 be dangerous even in some modern reproduction rifles.

The same .38 Spl vs .357 Mag. pressure anomaly is shown in IMR Trail Boss Data - with some details that were missing from the ADI data sheet.

The primer and barrel length differences shown in the IMR Data would appear to account for the seemingly backward pressure and velocity results:

Thanks, I looked that over and searched to web a bit and it seems my fear that a case full of Trail Boss is too much was overblown. "Would not a almost compressed load in a 45-70 under a 405 be dangerous even in some modern reproduction rifles." It would seem to produce similar pressures to full load of quality Black Powder.
