I just got a new Lee 452-228-1R mold and have been lubing these with Alox and also some with the LAM-2. Both ways are working O.K. as I am not having any leading problem in my Blackhawk…

What is the advantage or reason for the “shallow lube grooves” as indicated in the Lee catalog that shows these boolits?...

Thanks…BCB

No good reason at all. I still use Felix lube on them. Alox will not take you to full loads.

The two smaller lube grooves carry nearly the same lube as the Lee 230TC traditional lube groove design. As to why two smaller ones vs one larger I don't know and don't see much difference.

Ever notice that a 147 grain 9mm bullet will normally have one lube groove while a 150 grain 38 Special/357 Magnum bullet will normally have multiple grooves?

I suspect it has as much to do with tradition as anything followed by personal idiosyncrasies.

2 lube grooves allow you some latitude with your lubes viscosity.
try just lubing the bottom one, I have seen accuracy increase from just changing this one thing.

I think a lot of people have found like me that more lube is not always better. Too little is never better.
Just right is best. How much that is has lots of variables.

Im certain this post is no help at all!

it's not so much the amount of lube,, but how the lube acts.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer and have better results with one big lube groove......

I made a few molds with one big groove like a Keith and than went to two grooves on the rest. I get better accuracy with more grooves.
I have the RD 265 and it shoots plain super. I have other Lee TL boolits and with Felix, they shoot great.
The only thing I don't like about many Lee boolits is the small CG. As I load different boolits I need to put a shim under the seat die for Lee boolits. Need less crimp.
