Has anyone ever tried to substitute Large Rifle primers for Large Pistol? For large loads in 44 or 45?

IIRC, LR primers are taller than LP and will stick out of the pockets.

Yes, it is a dangerous practice because of the protruding primer.

I hadn't looked to see if there was a differance in sizes, Just asking. I guess I'll have to swap 1000 LR primers for SR [smilie=1:

All the above posts are correct. That is why loading manuals recommend LP primers in .44 Magnum used in rifles. The brass has the shallow pistol pockets. Oddly, SP and SR primers are the same height. Go figure.

I was going to buy a Mil-surp rifle and bought some(1000) LR primers last gun show(Jan). Ended up with a Yugo SKS, now I need SR primers. Thats what I get for trying to think.:drinks:

Mebbe you should just go buy a bigger gun that uses LR primers. Hey, some of us have bought guns for less reason. ;)

I forget which, but Rem. or Win. uses SR in 7.62X39, and the other company uses LR.

I was using Lapua and I think R-P just the other day and both were SR.

Is the difference in LP vs LR primer length new? In the RCBS Reloading Guide #3 (1973), they say that better accuracy was achieved in .44 mag rifles using LR primers. I don't have a dog in this race, I don't even own a .44 mag, just curious.

Hey wait a minute my grandfather was a Swede, but then he came over here about a 108 years ago. Last name was Johnson, probably a pretty rare name in Sweden.[smilie=1:

Did a search on google and found an article that said the Win. 7x39 used LR primers. It was an article on subsonic loads in 7x39, they recomend opening the flash hole a little for more reliable ignition. Miked LR at 0.1265 & LP at 0.1200 in depth.

I have some 200 of Rem. cases that are SR primers. They have since switched I have been told to LR. Gianni
