I have had my ssk barrel for a couple years just getting ready to shoot I want to shoot cast boolits. at about 200 GR. When I get the bullet seated the gas check is well below the neck of the case. I dont like to shoot them like that. I have tried 200 gr RCBS and a NEI mould 190 gr and a lyman mould I think it was a 311296 173 gr. and the only one to work so far is the the RCBS SIL. 165 Gr that drops 173 Gr ww gas check boolet best OAL I can get is 2.105. SSk say OAL should be 2.235. I dont know How many people on this forum shoot the contender in the 300 whisper. am I doing something wrong do I have a short throat or do you want the bullet to take up case capacity with sub sonic loads. I picked up another ssk 300 whisper for grandson
and it is the same.

Thanks
Kirb

It's quite likely that the barrel has a short throat. Most barrels are set up for those copper-condom covered things (for some reason) and they handle abrupt throat angles much better than cast. They frequently also have a much greater unsupported length which increases OAL when seated to engrave in the rifling.
The gas check inside the case should not be a problem as long as you're using ones that crimp on (Hornady, Gator, recent Lyman). The old slip-on types could come off under those conditions (had one do it last June, fell out in the chamber and blocked the next round from entering).
IIRC, Redneck Dan has an AR in .300 and used a throating reamer on it to allow seating heavy cast boolits for better stopping on saber-toothed hamsters (they can bite CLEAR THROUGH a finger if only injured). But then, he's been known to use a .45 on red squirrels.....:kidding:

The Saeco 301 has a long bore rider and may allow seating further out. I have one sample here that measures right at .300" on the bore rider.

Trail blazer,

Do you have any of the Saeco 301 cast up I would like to try a couple for fit before I buy a Mould I would pay for the bullets and shipping. What alloy are you casting with and what is the weight of the boolit. The catalog shows it at 196 grains.

Thanks

I just loaded some boolets cast from the rcbs sil. 165 gr gc 9lbs ww 1lbs lino. Putting 2400 in 7.2 to 7.7 gr. hope weather will let me shoot tomorrow and get some vel. and accuracy checks. 300 whisper has a 8 twist what is the twist with your 30/20?

Thanks

Those were cast from WW and they weighed close to the claimed 196. I don't think I have any cast up as I haven't been shooting 30 caliber much lately. I will take a look and let you know if I have any.

A 300 wisper is subsonic isn't it? Shoot it without the GC, and load it where you want on OAL.

Kirb, I only have three that I used for setting up dies etc. They have faint land marks but are not deformed except one has pliers marks on it where I pulled it from a case for some reason. They should work to give you some idea if that mold is suitable. The problem is that bullet molds are all a little different and I have heard of the Saeco 301 casting .302" on the bore rider. I was wrong on the weight. These weigh 204-205 grains. If you want them Pm me your address and I will put them in the mail Tuesday. No need to pay anything.

Kirb-

here is a thread from a few years back...

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=5334

it's worth reading. even if we did detour a little.

Greg,
Thanks that was a good read I think will try a few more boolits. Trailblazer is sending me some from a 301 saeco mould I will get a hold of Bullshop for a couple hundered different boolits. Its fun to shoot I have the 8 twist short throat with the 165 GR SIL. I am getting groups about 1.5 at hundered yards just want to try heaver boolits.

Thanks
