Just for the hell of it I slugged the throat of my .458 Win. Mag. today.

Here's the results from the .458 Win. Mag.:
26" 1 in 14" twist
Chambered: .458 Win. Mag.
Bore: .4572
Rifling: .452
Throat: approx. .37 lg. .460 dia.

I have been wondering why my .458 sized bullets shot well in the .458 Win. Mag.
and gave lackluster performance in my 45-70. They both have the same style barrel from the same maker but purchased at different times. They were chambered with different reamers, of course so its not surprising the throat area is different.

This is the results from the 45-70:
26" 1 in 14" twist
Chambered: .45-70
Bore: .458
Rifling: .453
Throat: approx. .12 lg. .4583 dia.

When I built the .458 Win. Mag. I just went ahead and happily shot it, the results were good so I never gave it another thought.

Just goes to show the importance of slugging the barrel so you know what you have.
