Well I got rid of my Mosin Nagants and about the only 30 cal I will use for cast now is my 30/30 Win 94. Since I like 2400 I would prefer to use that but the loading books do not really address the 30/30 using this powder at least the ones I have do not. Bullet would be the 311407. So what are your suggestions for a load using 2400. The only other gun would maybe be my Swiss 7.5 K31 and the results I got using 16 grains of 2400 were dismal using the 311407 bullet So I need to up the load up to a max of 20 grains or maybe find a more pointed bullet as it seems like I have to seat that blunt bullet pretty deep to work in the 7.5 case. Here is some data I worked up in a 336 Marlin; Federal Cases, Rem 9 1/2 primers, Lee 170gn FN GC cast from WW, water quenched, 50/50 Alox lube. Sized 0.311
This is Hercules (old) 2400. 5 shot groups 70 Degrees

16.5gr 1832fps Sd 33 3" @100

17.0gr 1850fps Sd 19 2.4"@100

17.5gr 1900fps Sd 28 2.75"@100

18.0gr 1953fps Sd 31 6.0"@100

I am happy with the results so far, I just haven't had time to refine the load more.

I load 15.0/2400 behind the 311291 for my Winchester 64A, which is the long-barrel short-magazine version of the 94. Light recoil, excellent accuracy, and it will knock down the 200m rams.

Rob

In you post you listed the following for a load:

16.5gr 1832fps Sd 33 3" @100

What is the defination of the following:

Sd
33 3"

I think he meant the velocity data had a standard deviation of 33fps, and the load produced a 3" group.

I should have added that I want this for a hunting load.

JH,

Well ..... if it's for hunting and not plinking, don't put regular gas in a Porche.

I would consider a slow powder. A "classic load" for that bullet is 31-32 grains of 748 in the 30/30 sized appropriately. You can shoot it up hill or down. Top velocity and accuracy to boot.

Fourarmed is right. The Standard deviation was 33 and the group was 3 inches at 100 yards. Sorry for the confusing post. These were only for 5 shots so the standard deviation is not from a big sample. however it usually shows a trend twoards an efficient load with a given powder. In my rifle, with these components, somewhere between 16.5 and 17.5 grains of my lot of powder should produce the best load.

I have used 16.5 of 2400 with a lee 160 gr. G C bullet a relitivly light load----My favoriate load for this bullet is 22 grs. of AA 5744 if u try this start around 19 grs. rifle is a marlin 336--perhaps a point of interest 22.5 will punch a clean hole in a 3/8 ths. steel plate at 50 yrds. If u told me this I would not believe it. A friend was at the range and saw the results 3 shots 3 clean holes. not recomending 22.5 may be too hot and maybe not. lead mix was 10% babbit---10%linotype--and some solder some range scraps and wheelwieghts droped in water-- lube was felix lube.----Keep em in the black.

I'll go with Bass on that one. Either around 30 gr. with H-335 or 31 gr. with Win. 748 is the bestest in the Westest.

Another agreement

With the 31141 I am using 16.5 of 2400 for mid range and the 748 for hunting. I use 30.5 of 748 for 1950 and am getting under 3" groups at 100 yards with iron sights. No leading either!

Well the biggest issue here is I have a pound of 2400 I bought and want to use up. I would prefer a load that could be used on deer. I had made up a load in the past for my 308 Encore that used if I remember right 19 grains of 2400 for a vel of 1800 using a 150 grain bullet. I got this out of my 42 edition Lyman book the 46 edition did not have any 2400 powder listings. :( The 42 manual said 18 grains with a 150 grain cast bullet would be in the 2100 range. Since my bullets I cast now are 170 + using a Lyman 311407 mould 16 grains is 1715 Vel. All I want is a load I can load up that will kill a whitetail. I know the 308 loads I cast up for my Encore did the job at close range anyway. I went back to jacketed with that gun but would prefer to keep the 30/30 and my 45/70 Cast loads as both calibers have such a good rep for cast loads. I know my Remington Roller in 45/70 pretty much shoots any load I make up well. Jim
