Took my 30-30 handi-rifle out last sunday and scored. using a lee 170 gr boolit at about 1900 fps. first saw him at about 75 yds screened by heavy brush. he turned and walked straight away from me so I thought he was gone. sent my son a text that he was headed his way. sent the text and looked up and saw the buck crossing my second shooting lane so I got ready for him to cross the 3rd shooting lane. when he stepped into the lane I fired and rolled him. to my surprise he got to his feet and calmly waked away! never saw that before, they usually leave quickly after being shot. Went to the spot that I hit him and found a lot of blood but no blood trail. the fact that the grass was waist deep didn't help. called the other guys and we began looking for him and found him (got lucky) about 100 yds away. turns out the shot was high and behind the lungs. Don't know if I clipped a limb on the way or just missed. The gun was shooting 1 1/2 - 2" groups at 100 yds when I sighted it in. anyway it was 135 lb, 8 point that looked to be 3 or 4 years old. 135 lb is pretty big where we hunt in NE okla. This was my second boolit deer. The buck I got last year with a double lung shot from my 45-70 didn't go very far. working on a 35 whelen for next year.
