View Full Version : What Are Your Levers, Revolvers, Combo's you use?

You have the combos like the:
.357 Mag handgun and rifle
.44 Mag handgun and rifle, along with the 444 Marlin option
45 Colt handgun and rifle
Then you have the mighty 45-70 rifle. :)

What rifle and handgun have you decided on?
I know just many options, just trying to make life more simple.

I think I've decided on a 44 mag lever/revolver combo, but haven't gotten around to getting the rifle yet.

The wife is interested in a 357 combo but again, no rifle in the safe yet.

You don't have listed the .44 Magnum rifle and revolver WITHOUT the .444 option.

You also omitted the .44-40 rifle and revolver combo.

Those are the ones I kept.

Been keeping an eye out for a 45/70 revolver.

I fiddled with a friends BFR 45-70 a year or two ago . It shot better then I could hold it with both jacketed and cast !

Oh yeah I had a Leupold 2x LER on top .

I have not sold any levers recently so I have decided to keep all I have. i have levers and revolvers in 38/357, other levers include 308, 358, 30-30. Too many revolvers to type. If I could own just one? Sorry I can own more than one.

I forgot, I lost everything in that boat accident.

Out of the close to 100 lever actions I had I am down to four !

A Winchester circa 1906 Model 1894TD in 30 WCF .

A Marlin 444 circa 1966 that's been cut down to 19" .
A Marlin 444 circa 1967 that's still 24".
A Marlin 444 circa 2001 that's been restocked with a rather nice piece of figured walnut .

I "had" a rather nice S&W 629 4" that I carried quite often when hunting .

But the 629's gone and all I have left are ,

A Ruger Single Six 5 1/2" circa early 60's .
A Colt Scout Buntline Special 9 1/2" circa 1962 .

Awhile back I also had a Ruger SP-101 in 327 Federal , when carried in a Bianchi Black Widow high ride holster made an excellent hunting finisher side arm . The 629 in a Galco high ride was okay but tended to drag my pants a good bit .

For plinking and hunting whilst not killing the lead and powder supply, the 38/357 combo is hard to beat. Play with .38's, hunt with .357.

45colt for nostalgia and big bullets. I have rugers and Rossi in both.

Ruger srh in 44 mag and rossi 92 44 mag. I prefer the 44 over the 357 due to the shock wave of the 357 revolver, for me it is hard to be proficient w/out saftey glasses in the 357. 44 does everything better anyways.

I own a 32-20, 30-30, 45 Colt, 357, 444, and 45-70 Marlin.
I have 357, 44 mag, and 45 Colt revolvers.

I don't really consider them companions, each has its own load likes and dislikes. I bought what I wanted, owning a like chambered rifle/handgun wasn't really even considered.

I have a Marlin .357 lever complemented with a Colt Python bright stainless .357; while I bought this Marlin to pair with the Colt wheel-gun in same caliber, I but once hunted with this combo. I have a beat up .30-30 Marlin 336 which I generally grab and take, complemented with a Ruger Security-six .357 revolver. I also have a Ruger .38-40/10mm "Buckeye" revolver I bought to hunt with a .38wcf Model 1892 Winchester --my 2nd 'pair' -- but, to be frank -- I generally grab the 336 Marlin .30-30 and Ruger .357.
BEST!

I use the .44 mag in Ruger SBH and S&W 's and a Win. Model 94.

I once had a Marlin Cowboy lever action in .45 Colt, but the chamber was cut too large, and bulged cases badly. Sent it back to Marlin, but when it came back, it still was too large, so I got rid of it.

I was wondering the same thing as those were the original offerings for both rifle/carbine and revolver in such combinations as Winchester 73 or 92 and Colt SAA.

While owning several revolvers and a lever action carbine in 45 colt, I think the handgun-and-rifle in a single cartridge concept isn't as useful as it first appears.

For best results on target you are more than likely going to end up with separate molds, loads and possibly even sizers for each gun. In 45 Colt you may not even be able interchange brass between the two due to the variances in chamber dimensions, forcing you to full length size everything and over work the brass. If that's the case, having them chambered for the same cartridge isn't much of an advantage.

in the field I would find it more useful to be carrying a center fire rifle/22lr handgun or 22lr rifle/center fire handgun than a rifle and handgun in the same cartridge.

I was expecting the same thing with my 92 rifle and cattleman pistol but strangely enough both chamber each other's brass unsized just fine. Both like there brass loaded unsized with a .454 200gr boolit or a .454 round ball, small grease cookie and full case of black powder.
I think I just got really lucky!

+1
-and I actually don't do the 444
Others have mentioned the 32-20, 38-40, 44-40 and 454.

Well let's see, which ones did you miss
22LR in revolver, semi auto, lever, single shot - handgun and rifle
222 in handgun - contender and rifle
223 in handgun (contender) and carbine/rifles
30 carbine in handgun (revovler and single shot) and carbine
9x19 in handgun, carbine, SMG
375 Big Bore - Contender and rifles
45 acp in handgun and carbine

and that's just in my experiences.

And KTW is correct in a lot of hunting situations I like a good rifle with some reach
and a 22LR handgun.

Hadn't really considered the Contender pistol/rifle combo but it seems I have those bases covered in .223 and 35 Rem. Didn't consider it because I don't carry a rifle when I carry a Contender pistol, they outshoot most rifles so the rifle would just be unnecessary baggage. My 32-20 rifle has a crappy bore so I can't say whether it likes the same ammo my revolvers like. My 45 Colt Trapper does OK with the ammo my RBH likes but the Trapper doesn't get out much so it's a moot point as well.
Common chambering of a handgun and a rifle in an interesting concept but it may make as much sense as a marketing concept as any other.

For me, a Rossi .44 mag cowboy rifle and Ruger SBH shortened to the end of the ejector rod housing and mag-n-ported. That's what I voted for.

I would also have voted for my wife's combo if it would have allowed, a Ruger old model .357 mag Blackhawk and Rossi carbine.

Yes, I also own a Marlin cowboy in .45-70, but since we're talking long gun / handgun combos (I think), this is not a consideration. I just don't have a need for a handgun of any type in .45-70.

38/357 here, 1894C and 586. Same loads shoot great in both so there is no need to load separate ammo for each one.

And while I don't have a 22lr revolver. I do have a lot of rifles an pistols chambered for it.

I have a Winchester Model 94 trapper chamber in .45LC and a Ruger Vaquero in .45 LC. And then I have a Marlin GBL Guide Gun in 45-70. Both levers I love. Both are very accurate. I've had the 94 for at least 15 years now I guess. I do have a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .357 Mag that I need to match up with a lever and I have a Stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44mag with a 10.5" barrel. I need a lever for her as well. And yes, this is my first post. Just found this site and been looking back at some of the older threads.

I have both Rossi 92s and Winchester 94s in both .357 and .45 Colt. I hate to say it, but I prefer the Rossi 92s for pistol rounds. The 92 action was made for the pistol rounds, while the 94 was made for .30-30/.38-55 length rounds, and that allows the 92 to feed smoother and faster. Now, they're equally accurate, but the 94s just don't work as smooth. My Rossi 92s see a lot more hunting use than the pistol caliber 94s.

father-in-law had a Python, Uberti SAA and Marlin in .357 His goal was one load for everything. Turned out that each only did well with a different load. So, he sold off the Marlin and gave me the Python :D :D

That Python really likes full bore loads best (125gn gas checked or jacketed). When I do my part it will group less than an inch at 25yds. If I run 'slow' loads in it the groups double in size (and sometimes triple).

The Marlin liked heavy bullets pushed slowly (180gn) and the Uberti liked medium weight (158gn) slow bullets.

Never had a 44 mag revolver, rifle or carbine. But at one time was thinking about getting one of those 444 revolvers :veryconfu

I've read the OP question and poll a couple of times and it still makes little sense. I can only guess it has something to do with having and shooting a rifle/carbine along with a revolver, both in the same caliber ???

If that's the case, then I've had several combinations that seem practical and go well together.

22rf ---- Win 9422 lever with S&W K22 revolver
32-20 -- Win 92 and 73 levers with Colt SAA revolver
357/38 - Marlin 94 lever with various S&W revolvers

...What rifle and handgun have you decided on?...

Unfortunately, I have decided I need a revolver and lever action combination chambered for the 45 ACP. The revolver is the easy part of the equation, the lever action, not so much.

The closest I could come would be a revolver and lever rifle chambered for the 45 Cowboy Special.

I see the adjustable sight guns now and then but your gun is like a big brother to a heavy bbl Model 10, I like that. Thanks for posting the ad copy, good stuff.

Combination handgun/rifle combinations have been an interest of mine for many years...

44-40 = SAA Colt with spare cylinder in .44 Special; Winchester Model 92 rifle. The Colt was ok (2"+) at 25 yds, the rifle would do 3 shot cloverleafs at 50.

.32-20 = S&W 4th variation HE, about 2" at 25 yds; Winchester Model 92 Octogon Rifle ca 1903 (2+" 50 yds)

.357 Magnum (most recent) = 4 S&W's and a Ruger BH all good for 2"+ at 25, Marlin 1894 1"+ @ 50 with 2.5x scope.

.44 Magnum = 2 S&W's & 3 Rugers, two in .44 special & one Magnum (an inch at 25 off rest);
Marlin 336 gps 2-1/2" at 100, Marlin 1894, about the same.

I seldom carry a side arm while hunting back east, I find a heavy handgun in .44 Magnum a real comfort when packing elk quarters out of the Colorado high country...especially when night is coming on. I once packed a fore quarter out to my jeep without packing a rifle as well, and found fresh bear tracks over mine on the way back to make a second trip! I gave up on that plan, and hoisted all the meat I could with a cpl of nylon tow straps, but most of it stayed on the ground. The next morning I was back at first light and found it all undisturbed. A 45 oz S&W makes an easier packing out tool than a 9 lb. .35 Whelen, believe me.

All the best to you and yours in this season of hope and joy....Merry Christmas, Rod BTW: pic is of my Marlin 336 in .44 magnum with a flat top Ruger in .44 Special.

You left out 250 savage/44 mag.

This might seem funny to You guys, but I have a single six/marlin combo.
I also have a 44 mag combo but shoot a 45 colt rifle more.

Now for the funny part, if I am carrying the 39a or any other 22 rifle, I will always pack the 44 sbh, now if I am carrying a large rifle, I will usually be carrying the single six. It would be rare to carry, both of the same caliber.

Makes sense to me . . . If hunting small game with my .22 or .17 . . . I'm gonna carry my .454 Toklat for protection . . . If using my .308 or .454 rifle for hunting . . . I'll carry a .22 handgun for small game or plinking . . .

For me, a Rossi .44 mag cowboy rifle and Ruger SBH shortened to the end of the ejector rod housing and mag-n-ported. That's what I voted for.

This is my setup, or the Redhawk cause it's stainless like my rifle. But the 5" sbh is pretty awesome for a backup gun...

Hi...
I never really planned to have a handgun/rifle combination but it just sort of worked out that way.
I have been toting around a Marlin .22mag lever-action rifle paired with a Kimel Industries(same as Heritage)Western Six with interchangeable .22LR/22mag cylinders for quite a few years. both have accounted for a fair number of squirrels and groundhogs over the years. I always meant to buy a better quality .22Mag revolver but this fixed sight Western Six is just so very accurate out to 25 yards that it just never became a priority to replace it. I do have a very nice Dan Wesson .22LR DA revolver that is very nice but I never have acquired another .22Mag revolver.

I recently bought a Cimarron 1873 lever action rifle in .45Colt to go with all the .45Colt revolvers I have, mostly Vaqueros and BlackHawks with a couple of S&W and Cimarrons tossed into the mix for good measure.
I haven't yet decided if I need to pair up a lever-action carbine with my .357Mag, .41Mag, .44Spl or .44Mag revolvers. Maybe someday...we will see.

I might be biased. 2 Rossi 1892s and 2 Colt SAAs (1 is a clone) in .38/.357 just to prove that I'm NOT prejudiced, (and my wife likes them)!
