I was re-reading my Lyman CBHB#1 (copyright 1958) looking for some new (nothing new under the sun) insights on 22 hornet.

I then seen the page that mentions Lyman charges $50 to make a custom mold

I wonder what that is in today's dollars ?

As been said here many times, we are surely "IN" the golden age of boolit Mold manufacturing.

These certainly are the good old days.

50 bucks in 1958 was a heap of money.

How can you say that? Hensley & Gibbs moulds from the 1930's to the 1970's were as good an example of the machinist's art as anyone can possibly do. The steel (ususally used Meehanite alloy) and the tolerances and the quality of workmanship is unsurpassed. I am sure that some mould makers today put out a quality product, but i cannot see how they are BETTER than Hensley & Gibbs moulds....even those from the 70's and 80's.

That is ONE mould maker from the past. Today we can get custom moulds of great quality for a very reasonable price.

Jon was comparing a 50 dollar 1958 custom Lyman mould with a 100 dollar today Mihec or NOE mould. Heck, Accurate Moulds does true custom moulds for about the same price.

100 dollars today compared to 50 dollars in 1958? Not even close.

OK, the current custom molds may not be "better". However, in my opinion, they ARE certainly as good as I need - in all respects. I own a few H&G originals. They are super molds. Then I look at the boolits they produce, consider the effort it takes to make those boolits and the H&G's really don't PERFORM better. One of these days, I am gonna have to get meehanite mold from Accurate. I'd bet it will be a thing of beauty... You know, just as soon as I have some money I don't need !!!!! Mike

So we have a comparison of 1958 dollars to 2014 dollars for a custom mould, $50 to $314.

Way back then, almost everyone on this forum would have been unable to afford a SC, DC, or 4C custom mould from Lyman.
Now almost anyone can afford custom moulds and not just one in a lifetime. Also, we have far more mould designers to choose products from! This is truly the golden age of casting.
Now watch Gov't screw it up by banning lead!

In 1958 a Deputy Sheriff was makning $425 a month for 6 days a week. Roughly that would be close to $400 in current buying power.

In 1958, I was a Marine PFC, and made (if memory serves me right) about $80.00 a month along with three hots and a cot!

In 1958 the local sawmill was paying $8.00 for a ten hour day of work. Folks were raising families on that wage, as well as making payments on a car, and a house mortgage.
A weeks worth of groceries cost about $20.00 if you had 3 kids. Credit was difficult to get and folks would save money to purchase luxury items.
A meal in the local restaurant for a family of 3 was under $5.00.
My mother kept records of every penny spent in a ledger and held a tight budget.
I read that ledger from time to time to remind myself that toilet paper is a luxury...
