I got a text from my seminary roommate and close friend today. He's down hunting deer in NE. He shot himself a very large doe - he is about 5'9" and there are no picture tricks here. He's using the loads we developed together for his rifle in seminary. Ranch Dog 165 50/50 pure/COWW and a good dose of Varget - don't recall the exact recipe so I won't post - it's in my notes, but running around 1900 fps. This is his first kill with the .30-30 - he's killed his previous deer with .30-06 and 165 gr. Nosler BTs that we loaded for his rifle as well. I'm more than a little jealous that he killed a deer with a cast boolit out of a rifle before I did. All of my cast kills on deer are with a .454 Casull or .357 Max out of my Encore as a pistol. He was very pleased with the performance. About 40 yds, broadside, in and out the ribs. He said he shot, she flinched and just stood there for about 10 seconds, then fell over. Very proud of him!

They do grow big deer here in the heartland. I'm not originally from Kansas, and the first time I saw a mature buck up close here I just about freaked out, twice what a deep south back would be.

Congrats to your friend. I have used that same Ranchdog bullet of about the same alloy with good success in a .308. The .30-30 would have done just as well.

Nice job! That one should fill the freezer all by herself!

Great job. Its one of the best feelings in the world when someone kills a nice critter with a boolit you made and tested yourself to do a certain job.:bigsmyl2:

Its an awesome feeling.

This is some proof that when the question of what mold for the 30-30 comes up, the answer is Ranch Dog 165 grain.

Good Job! Was a little confused at first when I saw those Texas plates behind that huge doe. ;-) Those cornfed deer do indeed get pretty big.

Nice deer, and another CB success!

The RD165gc over 34grs. Ramshot Big Game works well for me.
