Been looking for ingredients to start makin a batch of lube.

Carnauba is some expensive stuff, depending upon where you find it. I was looking for a small qty, so I wasn't exactly getting the best prices when I did find it available.

One source, I found local, seems like it will be all I need for a while, and the per ounce cost is less than anywhere else I found in the quantity I wanted when you include shipping and being local, no waiting is nice.

Kinda suprised me, but it is the real deal. Got it at PepBoys for $13/12oz in the shoe polish type can. It's pure, smells like the other stuff I have that I bought in flakes and is a whole lot easier to find - and cheaper ;)

Thought maybe some of you might find this useful.

BigSlick,

You need the flakes, not car wax. Do a Google search on T3 Carnauba.

I have added a pea size lump of a carnauba floor wax to my FWFL. This generally makes about 4 oz. It works fine. Make sure that there are no other additives other than waxes. Gianni

I have some of the flakes I bought off fleabay, but that's running low.

I opened the tin up to make sure it isn't some goop car wax, it's a cake, as in cracked up due to shipping. Not sure how you're supposed to apply this to a car without some heat or ??? but it is definitely in cake form, and cracked/chipped up.

Are there any significant differences between T1 and T3 for lube purposes ?

I looked up a few specs online, and the T1 has a slightly higher melt point and slightly lower acid content.

Not questioning what you're saying here at all, just didn't know there were different grades of carnauba available.

I guess I could always use the stuff to wax my work truck

I went with T3 because of its properties and lower cost. As I recall, I paid about 8 or 9 bucks a pound for the T3. A single TBS of T3 in 1.5+ pounds of lube makes a big difference in the texture but not so much in the melting point. The melting point can be influenced more by the addition of pure sodium stearate which is about 1/2 the price of Carnauba and melts at about 400F (you need to melt it in hot oil).

Use a single tsp of T3 at a time in a pound of lube while experimenting. When I over did it with T3, I needed to add a TBS of lanolin and a bit of Jojoba 'cause it dried the lube out too much (the lube wouldn't stick properly to the lube grooves while pan lubing).

A lot of the time car wax has micro polishes in the wax to polish the oxidation off the paint/clear coat. These would be no good for the boolit lube maker.

You can get all the stuff you need to make bullet lube at www.thesage.com

Prices look reasonable to me, and certainly a lot cheaper than doing much running around looking. Pure carnuba is around $9 a pound, as is lanolin. Don't recall the price on sodium stearate, but know they stock it. Got a lot of other interesting stuff, too, if any of y'all are getting seriously into this stuff. I was happy to just make a big batch of Felix.
