After a previous attempt with split nose boolits (foil strips place in molds prior to pouring) i decided to give it another try. Years ago I had shot a small buck with split nose boolits out of a 7.62x39 and while I got the deer I had not been impressed with its performance. This time around I used my Browning model 71 with a 220gr LBT lfn running about 1900fps and it worked like a champ! Maybe a bit too good, really did a number on the onside shoulder. 121159121160121161121162

Nice deer, I am not sure the 348 needed a split nose to put it down. It looks like a rib got centered which will blow a lot of bone out, increasing the wound channel also. The exit hole looks nice and round. I understand a split nose usually shears off, did you see any evidence of that? High lung shot should have split it before it got to the ribs.
Congratulations on a nice buck with cast.

You are correct about the 348 not needing a split nose boolit but it was not done out of need but more of a desire to see how well it would work. I have also used soft nosed cast boolits in the 348 and these work very well too. I will post some pictures later of the boolits I used.

Doesn't get any better than that; good animal, fine weapon and ammo you developed and made yourself. Congratulations.

Do you guys not have snow up there yet? I would have guessed some had fallen that far north by now.

We had about 6" of snow last weekend but it is all gone now. Where I am on the coast the seawater temp moderates the air temp quite a bit and we don't get the extreme snow they get in norther maine

I have cast 44 magnum bullets that way instead of foil i used heavy paper they worked well on vermin but i never shot a deer with them.
