I haven't bought a book in several years but this one is a GREAT read. So far the things he said that gave him the best results seem to mirror what I have found also. He is a very articulate and well written man and for any shooters in the San Diego area, the Barnes and Noble in East Lake ordered two by mistake and I told them I'd mention it to my shooting friends.

I've read that book 5 times and on the 6th time now and each time I read it....I learn something new! I really wish I could own one of those Warner rifles! The guys that built those rifles.....were way and beyond EXCELLENT!!

Odd you would mention the Roberts book. As with Sharpsman I just finished it yet again last week, probably for the 5th or 6th time. Great book. Just recently somewhere I saw a Nelson Lewis double rifle for sale.

I particularly like the discussion & depictions of the groups achieved, at the distances they were achieved at.

It really lets you know what can be accomplished with these type of arms. Gives one a sense of something to strive for.

The book was recommended reading from several members here, when I acquired my first ML. Thanks to those of you that made the recommendation. I apologize for not remembering those people individually.

Great book IMO.

Some 5 years ago after reading Ned Roberts Book "The Muzzle Loading Caplock Rifle" I embarked on building one. This is the result.50 cal 1in 26 Twist.I did not go so far as making a false muzzle but may do so in the future.

Even if you did nothing but look at the pictures it would be worth the money.

Although I don't shoot muzzleloaders very often, I have ended up with 2 copies of Ned Robert's book, "The Muzzleloading Cap Lock Rifle". Occasionally, if I find a really good deal on a book, I will buy a 2nd copy just in case. This time I found a copy in much better condition than the 1st.

Based on the picture above, I assume this thread is about "The Breech Loading Single Shot Rifle", I don't own one of that type rifle but the book is still very interesting.
EDIT: Just looked at the post and pictures again. That is a cap lock.

Another book that some might find interesting is "The Muzzle-Loading Rifle: Then and Now", by Walter M. Cline. I find it at least as interesting as the Robert's books. Maybe because it focuses on the history of muzzle loading activities in the southern states, especially, Tennessee.

does it include round ball info or just conicals?

I have not read the whole book in several months but tend to read several pages now and then when something makes my mind itch. The book covers all methods of muzzle loaders, both round ball, conicals and the long range Gibbs types. Lots of info on which shooter shot what, how they did things such as cleaning, loading, etc. He also mentions underhammer long range guns that use shotgun primers or regular primers and that is my next project, to make another 45 caliber 1 in 18 twist large barrel under hammer gun. I have a set of Lee Shaver tang sights and front globe to use to start out.

He mentions things such as how to figure powder load, how to clean, what to use as patches, what to use as lube, etc.

i think and you can correct me he talks about the picket bullet. a short pointed bullet loaded with a cloth patch. said it was very accurate if loaded right, if my memory is correct. i think it was ned roberts books.

It shoots good with both Paper patched or Canelured Bullet and 70 Grains of 3f.I rifled this using a twisted 1"x 3/16" steel bar running through two rollers attached to a Rod and a Rifling Head and a index I made for 7 grooves. The lock is a Back action Shotgun Lock.it was necessary to cut a half cock notch and modify the Tumbler with a detent to avoid dropping on half cock when letting the hammer go due to a push forward single set trigger I made. The Lug forwards of the Trigger guard is a square headed stud for Barrel removal. All hard work done when I was keen and unaware of the work involved.I made the hammer to suit the Nipple distance.

Thanks guys for turning me on to this book. Just ordered a copy from Amazon for my father who will forward it on to me when he has read it. Thanks again for the post/comments. Been shooting caplocks since my father got me started at 13. I am sure this book will give us lots to talk about!

I think any one that wants to start shooting muzzleloaders should read three books the two above and the section in the lyman reloading manual.
I think every one should read the lyman manual it would do away with a lot of myths I see posted quite often.
