Daniel Daly's bravery resulted in the award of his second Medal of Honor. He was the fightin' est Marine to ever wear a uniform. I always thought it interesting that so many Marines at Belleau Woods were attached to the 2nd ID division. He was awarded the DSC and Navy Cross for the same actions in June 1918, yet he was pictured wearing the Army decoration.

Citation:

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor (Second Award) to Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Joseph Daly (MCSN: 73086), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 15th Company of Marines (Mounted), 2d Marine Regiment, on 22 October 1915. Gunnery Sergeant Daly was one of the company to leave Fort Liberte, Haiti, for a six-day reconnaissance. After dark on the evening of 24 October, while crossing the river in a deep ravine, the detachment was suddenly fired upon from three sides by about 400 Cacos concealed in bushes about 100 yards from the fort. The Marine detachment fought its way forward to a good position, which it maintained during the night, although subjected to a continuous fire from the Cacos. At daybreak the Marines, in three squads, advanced in three different directions, surprising and scattering the Cacos in all directions. Gunnery Sergeant Daly fought with exceptional gallantry against heavy odds throughout this action.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Daly#cite_note-10)

The medals awarded to Marines were not always Navy medals.

from Wiki

Since the Medal of Honor was established, 19 recipients have received it twice, of whom 5 received both awards during World War I.[9] These 5 men were all Marines who received both the Army and Navy versions of the Medal of Honor for the same action. This was made possible by the practice of attaching some units of the U.S. Marine Corps, a part of the Department of the Navy, to larger U.S. Army commands, making Marines in such units eligible for both Army and Navy decorations. Of the other three Marines who earned the Medal of Honor during World War I, two were awarded only the Navy version and one, Fred W. Stockham, received only the Army version.[10] In February 1919, the criteria for the award were amended to state that no person could receive more than one Medal of Honor, thus precluding any future double recipients.[11]

also from Wiki

Sergeant Major Daniel Joseph "Dan" Daly (November 11, 1873 – April 27, 1937) was a United States Marine and one of only nineteen men (including seven marines) to have received the Medal of Honor twice. Of the Marines who are double recipients, only Daly and Major General Smedley Butler received their Medals of Honor in two, separate conflicts.

Daly is said to have yelled, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" to the men in his company prior to charging the Germans during the Battle of Belleau Wood in World War I.

Major General Butler described Daly as, "The fightin'est Marine I ever knew!" Daly reportedly was offered an officer's commission twice to which he responded that he would rather be, "...an outstanding sergeant than just another officer."[citation needed]

The Medals of Honor are on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia.

The photos would appear to be related to his actions in France rather than his actions in Haiti.

Heres the order of events.

In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion in China, he received his first Medal of Honor for single-handedly defending his position against repeated attacks and inflicted casualties of around 200 on the attacking Boxers.

His second Medal of Honor came fifteen years later, when he was fighting with US forces supporting the government in Haiti against rebels. On the night of October 24, 1915, he was part of a group of 35 Marines who were ambushed by a force of approximately 400 Cacos (Haitian insurgents). He led one of the three groups of men during the fight to reach a nearby fort, and was awarded the medal for his conspicuous actions.

He was awarded the Navy Cross for "repeated deeds of heroism and great service" during the Battle of Belleau Wood in World War I.

So the MOH awards came before the Navy Cross award.
The photo was taken after the Navy Cross award.

The 2d Infantry Division (U.S. Army), had a 4th Brigade consisting of Marines, and was commanded by Marine General Lejune during the Great War. General Pershing directed that all US divisions deploying to France be significantly over-strength to compensate for their lack of combat experience. He did this by adding a fourth brigade to each division. Gen. Pershing also insisted that correspondents not identify Army units involved in combat, to avoid providing intelligence to the enemy. He made no such demands about Marine units, which accounts for the Marines getting so much publicity out of The Great War.

BTW, Dan Daly is one of two Marines to be awarded the MOH twice. He is given credit for the quote "Come on you sons of bitches. Do you want to live forever?"
