1st deer ever actually. The majority of Western NY and the Southern tier, formerly shotgun only, now permit rifles. This is the first year Livingston County has allowed rifles as a legal implement. The young men pictured are my son's friends, their father being my son's scoutmaster. Last weekend was a youth gun opener and I learned that Ben's father didn't own a rifle. Being as I have a couple, being as Ben has rifle shooting merit badge, being as Ben has completed hunter safety and being as I trust the man with my own kid, I had no compunction whatsoever lending Ben my tang safety 7-08.

It's my go to youth rifle: it's a fairly tame cartridge in a decently hefty and accurate rifle. Ben and his father were walking in to their blind and spotted this guy about 100 yards away. He went into a hedgerow while they set up. The next time he showed himself Ben commenced to hostilities. The only shot fired landed right in the boiler room, instantly pole axing him.

Bolt closed, pointed in the general direction of the boys?

My 10yo son has taken 3 deer with his 7mm08. What a great little round... We had it out on youth day, it's a single shot H&R, now he's wanting a bolt action 08 because he's "outgrown" single shots. LOL

I was thinking of that before I saw Wiliamwaco's post
I do admire the gesture though of helping the youth

Good eating buck, I prefer the younger ones but I am a meat hunter. The picture may make the rifle look tilted further than it really is but yeah, should not have been laid that way.

However it is laying the bolt should be open! Congrats on the first deer.

The younger one should have on blaze orange as well. Even if you're not hunting, if you are "helping" a hunter, the laws covering blaze orange still apply.

NICE buck too! Younger/smaller deer are much easier for us old guys to drag out of the woods!

Congrats it is always good to see a kid get into hunting.
