I learned something last night while watching a British mystery on PBS. I didn't know that you could fire a rifle, say a 7mm [they showed the two bullets for comparison. They were spitser style, maybe 165 grain ] into water, retrieve them, fire it in a shotgun, which would preserve the markings on the bullet from the rifle since the shotgun is a smooth bore, kill someone and thereby blame the owner of the rifle. Hey, I am as shocked as you are. When they got around to returning the rifle to the owner's family you could easily see it was an air rifle, the kind that uses the barrel break over method to cock it. Who says PBS isn't educational?

Make a sabot for a recovered fired bullet..... like a 223 slug in a 30 cal with a sabot..... yeah murder she wrote.

Sabot ?
that'd keep it from getting scuffed up as it goes through the shotgun barrel.

Hi",Inspector Lewis",the old lady specifically asked for the return of her"air gun"(post# 1)The female doc told the cops that the BULLET had not exited the corpse and Insp.Lewis mused that it was maybe low velocity(post#7) I like PBS but you,ve gotta stay awake for some of their plots.LOL Cheers,Mike..P.S.They,re so anti gun in the UK that they,re not going to give out info on how to do it properly!!

Can't paper patching can be used to practically eliminate rifling marks for ID purposes also?

paper patching done properly leaves rifling marks in the core.
done improperly and it goes wherever [shrug]
you could miss a 30 yd shot or hit side way's with a lucky one.

saboting the used projectile would be the preferred method.
doable with a shot shell round for sure, but not by some yokel with no knowhow of how either cartridge works.
