Gross weight less avg of 16% due to clips, trash and other stuff has been my experience

Corey, it will depend on the size of the WWs. The large truck WW will yeild more lead than the really small WW, I know that this is not a very good response to your question but I have never weighed the clip vs the yeild so can't say for sure. It will depend on wheather the shop you get them from works more on truck tires or car tires. I am sure that someone will chime in with a good answer....Wes

reason I ask is that I just melted and made muffins,
about 40 lbs of ww's gave me about 6-2 lbs muffins, so 12 lbs, since this is my first time, I knew something was wrong. I got a 64 oz can full of waste, over full actionuly.
I am thinking of slitting the can and trying to melt the lead I though out down again?

HH57, that's a great answer.

I've only gotten the big truck weights once or twice in my casting life and I almost forget about them.

I've had a bucket full of small ww (clip ons) that yielded a whole lot less than a bucket of larger ww's.

Good guess is about 15-20% loss by weight.

I just started this addicting hobby a week or two ago. I am keeping a log book with dates, places where I obtain the ww, gross wt and then net wt, ect. So far I am averaging between 15 to 20% loss depending on trash content.

Talking about those semi truck WW, I smelted a batch of WW that I got from a service station that works on a lot of semi trucks. Man, some of those things are huge!! I got one WW out of them that weighed 12ozs!!! I think I am going to take it to my taxidermist and have it mounted!! Biggest one I have seen so far.

I did a before & after weight test on a five gallon bucket of ww's. Result = 16% scrap, 84 % ingots.

Hey JR,
Good to see you around. You should add some more articles to your webpage. I like your writings.

I bet by weight these guys are right- but the volume of the junk surprises me!

I fill a 3lb coffee can with junk darn near every 5 gal pal of wheel weights!

I am thinking of slitting the can and trying to melt the lead I though out down again? You may have skimmed a little too early and skimmed some alloy with your dross

Corey, I'd save that waste and throw it into your next smelting batch.

After you have melted all the lead alloy, I suggest fluxing. You'll reduce some of the oxides and yield more metal. You need to use a fryer basket or slotted spoon, so you don't pick up significant amounts of alloy when you're skimming.

I flux once after all the alloy is molten and then again after I have removed all the steel and ther stuff.

I got about 1/3 of it out of the can and melted. mixed it with the type wheel wights and some old sinkers and some other scrap lead I had. 6 more muffin ingots about 1.75lbs each. :drinks:

going to hit more of it later. I am going to have to cut the can to get the rest out of the can.
